A story I heard, for sharing.

A handsome young man was travelling on a train.  The journey would take him a few hours.  He was sitting beside an old man.  The young man was trying to take a nap but he could not sleep, because he was a bit anxious, as he was going to meet his potential girl friend soon.  He was thinking, since he was so bored, why not start a conversation with that old man, so that he could pass the time faster.  As he had forgotten to wear his watch, he then started the conversation by asking the old man what was the time.  To his surprise, the old man did not reply him, moreover, no smile.  He then repeated his question about the time, no reply, so he stood up, turned the body and asked someone else who sat behind him.

Being a pleasant man, he decided to break the ice and continued to talk to the old man, this round, he talked about the weather, but to his surprise, the old man just gave a very hostile look at the young man, when the young man mentioned that the weather was a bit humid that day.

“This old man may not be feeling well, forgive him, I’m a gentleman, I should not be so petty”.  He then tried to talk more to the old man.  This round, he talked about the condition of the train.  To his surprise, the old man gave him a very cold stare and then closed the eye, pretend to sleep.

“This old man may be a mute or probably he is deaf, poor old man”.  When the old man opened his eyes again, the young man then tried to communicate with him with a bit of hand gestures.  Suddenly, the old man opened his golden mouth “I am not a mute, I am also not deaf, young man”.  The young man was surprised, so this old man could talk and also hear.

“May I know, sir, why you ignored me totally just now, did I offend you in any way, I’m very curious, is it that you detest me being talkative, hey, I am being friendly to you, am I wrong?  Forget it, my mood is good today”.

The old man finally answered “Young man, it’s fine, I don’t detest people being friendly, but I have to ignore you.  Okay, tell you the truth.  I find you are a very handsome and pleasant man.  I decided not to be friendly to you, as you know, once we become friendly, we may talk till the end of the journey, and by the then, when we reach our destination, I may invite you to my house.  I have a very pretty daugther, she is very matching with you.  I am 100% sure that both of you will be attracted to each other.  Know what, I dote my daugther a lot, I will not want her to marry someone who could not even afford to buy himself a watch, so I’m very sorry, I can’t be friendly to you”.

Moral of the story :

Sometimes a prejudice can be very ridiculous, people can just jump to conclusion. The old man just assumed that the young the man did not wear a watch as he could not afford to buy it, that’s ridiculous.  This is happening in real life, sometimes people just make wild guesses here and there, and at times get angry and cause a lot of misunderstanding.

Very true really, most prejudices are ridiculous as you put it.

  • SharifaMcFarlane on May 30, 2011

Lol. I have experienced similar situations. Sad for them.

  • CA Johnson on May 30, 2011

It really is a shame that people can behave that way. That truly was a ridiculous reason not to talk to the guy. He could have lost his watch on his way to the train. The other man will never know why he was not wearing his watch.

Interesting story. Star, the old man’s reply is really surprising. It’s true that we always jump into conclusion too fast. As I always put my watch in my bag rather than wear it on my hand, I hope nobody will think I am too poor and can’t afford a watch. :D

Sometimes we make wrong conclusion, so it is really good to avoid prejudice.

  • PR Mace on May 30, 2011

Prejudice is just something I have never really understood. Nicely done.

    Very ridiculous

I too agree that many are too prejudice, and always came to poor judging. Moral of the story, I must wear a watch whenever I\’m in a journey.. LOL

LOL! I think that old man could become a kind of film director or what! How could he feels so sure that the young man will come to his house? The young man could have other activities to be done, right? And how could he feels so sure that the young man and his daughter could attract each other? Surely you mentioned that this young man was going to meet his potential girlfriend soon. Well, this old man is really ridiculous, I really agree with you.

Haha, great story with good moral. Many times over, people looked at me as if I was some kind of, ehm, retard, homeless guy or alcoholic. Just because I usually wear fewer layers of clothes in colder months (why should I wear a jumper or a coat when I’m not cold?) than most other people. Alcoholic, because I usually buy entire month worth of stash of beer at once. Lol, I buy 13beers once in a month (during hotter months, 1-3beers in cold ones) and people stare at me like I was the biggest alcoholic in the world. While many guys (usually men that seem to be over 40) I see in the mall buy 6pack every day (at least everytime I am there) and noone stares at them.

Prejudice makes no sense at all. We are all human.

  • Tulan on May 31, 2011

We should have no room for prejudice.

  • anndavey650 on Jun 1, 2011

Bearing grudges and having prejudice is generally a waste of time. We have no right to judge others situations based on our own standards, if we were in the same situation… all might change.

I don’t wear a watch, as I already have a phone with me to tell the time wherever, whenever I want it to. Wonder what the old man might think of me? ‘Simply insolent, to find it even too cumbersome to bear the weight of a simple watch on the left wrist at all times’, perhaps.Indeed I am. That’s why I wear it on my more commonly used right hand. :) Great post mate.

Prejudice is everywhere. Sometimes, we are not aware we are committing it. Good take star.

  • isloooboy on Jun 7, 2011

I know so many people who still believe on “First impression is the last impression” but your story telling us entirely the opposite side. Where first impression is loosing the moral ground instead of winning. Very true and nice article

One should never judge on appearances…Great post, friend!
