A choir’s summer garden party is a huge success.
We didn’t actually sing that one. It’s real title, or first line at least, is How sweet the sound that echo makes of music at night
We did, however, sing lots of others from our repertoire. We sang them without our choirmaster. Our chairman conducted – just about – he didn’t really need to – we worked together – and I think we actually performed to one another. We were four sopranos, four altos, four tenors and a base. It worked. We were confident. We engaged with each other.
It came together well. Can a garden have good acoustics? You wouldn’t think so. Yet the sound didn’t get lost. We had one sole person as audience – a partner of one choir member. He sat back and was entertained. We entertained each other.
“What will the neighbours, think?” asked one.
“They’ll think they’ve died and gone to Heaven,” said another. “Then they’ll have such a shock they’ll have a heart attack and actually die.” Macabre.
“How can anyone object?” remarked a third.
They couldn’t could they?
What a selection:
Only you
Scarborough Fair,
Senzenina
Tulla
Step by step
Long train running
Walk together
I am a river
Unison in harmony
Change the world
Can you feel the love?
How much is that doggie in the window?
And others I’m sure.
When choirmaster Jeff is not there, chair Andy takes over. He’s often very nervous. Not today though. It all went very smoothly.
It was a fabulous garden party. Such a pretty garden. Such grand weather. And a fine range of food and wine in our well organised Jacob’s Join. Not to mention the great company and excellent singing.
