A skeptic’s trip to a haunted house changes his mind.

To make a long story short, they went back in again. One of the camera operators was a college student doing a documentary for a class. She had a camcorder with her and had been following directly behind my wife while filming. I asked her if she had heard the growl too and she said she wasn’t sure. So, she rewound her camera and I watched my wife going through the house on her little camera screen. I was just about to leave for another cup when I heard it…and what I heard stopped me dead in my tracks.

From the camera’s tiny speaker, I heard what sounded like some sort of very large, wild beast, growling very deeply and fiercely. Only, it was unlike any animal growl I had ever heard. It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up….and sent a chill right through me. She heard it too and we looked at each other in surprise.

“Did you hear that?” we both said at the same time.

She rewound it again and we both heard it again. It was scary as hell. I didn’t know what had made that noise, whether it was an animal, or not of this world, but it sounded very large and very angry. I also knew I did not want my wife wandering around in the dark with that thing loose in there. Just because they hadn’t found it didn’t mean it couldn’t be hiding in there somewhere.

When she came out again I insisted that she not go back in there until they found the creature that had growled.

It turned out that nobody else had heard it besides my wife and the college student, although the entire camera crew had been close together. Later it was replayed for everyone and everyone heard it. Not a single person in the group could identify it as a type of animal. Hearing it the third time did nothing to lessen the impact…it sounded demonic to me.

The house was eventually deemed haunted by the crew due to the growl and some other evidence that they found. On our way home I thought about it as my wife slept.

There are things out there that we don’t understand, of that I am sure…I and a lot of others heard the proof that night. What was it? I don’t know, I will probably never know for sure, but it did wake me up a bit.

I don’t call myself a total disbeliever anymore. I don’t believe everything I’m told of course…but because I heard what I heard it with my own ears that night…I have to say now that at least in this instance, I do believe…I do I do I do.
