My family moved away and left me behind. What will become of me now? Can I come home with you? I’ll love you forever!

Well, hello, are you going to take me home with you?

Yes, the nice people here say that I am a stray…whatever that is.

Is that a problem? I need a good home, you see, my human family didn’t want me anymore and moved away, leaving me behind. I tried to stay out of trouble and fend for myself but I guess trouble found me anyway because here I am.

What’s that? What breed of dog am I you ask? Well, I’m not sure…I think my father was a German Shepard and my mother was a Doberman, so, what does that make me?

“A mutt”, you say? Is that a good thing? Oh, wait, you look disappointed, maybe it’s a bad thing…please give me a chance I’ll do anything to please you!

I don’t shed very much…and I’m house broken. I won’t eat a lot because I’ve gone hungry for quite awhile now and so my stomach has shrunk.

“I’m ugly”, you say…well, I’m sorry, I can’t do much about that but I’ll do my very best to make you happy everyday! Are looks really all that important? They must be… it must be a human thing.

Won’t you please give me a chance, and a new home? … Wait! Please don’t go!

Please come back! Don’t leave me here! They say they’ll have to put me to sleep if someone doesn’t take me home with them soon! Please, I don’t want to die!

The heavy metal door slams shut. Silence fills the cold room.

“I’m going to be put to death…and it’s all my fault because my family didn’t want me, anymore. “I’m a “mutt” and I’m ugly. Beauty seems to be important to humans and I don’t have any.”

I wonder how much longer I have before I’ll be executed… I wonder how they’ll do it…

Will it be painless? Will I actually just go to sleep? I guess I’ll just not ever wake up again… all because my family didn’t want me anymore…”

“Hi pretty boy! Would you like to come home with me?”

“What’s this? Another human? I guess I was so upset that I didn’t even hear you come in!”

“What’s your name, big guy? Can I pet you? How about letting me scratch you behind the ears, do you like that?”

“Oh, yes! I do like to be scratched behind the ears! It feels wonderful!”

“You poor dog, you’re nothing but a bag of bones! Oh my Gosh! How long has it been since you had a good meal? … Aww, you’ve been abused and neglected!”

“Huh? I have?”

“Oh, let me give you kisses for your kindness! Oh, this feels marvelous! Will you take me home with you?”

“Bless your heart! You’re just starved for attention, aren’t you?”

“Oh, yes, I am, it’s been so long since anyone showed me any affection!”

“I wonder what your name is…the tag doesn’t say…it just says that you’re a stray…”

“Yes, they call me a stray but my family named me “Butch”…I guess there’s no way I can tell you that though…”

“Well, you’re coming home with me. We’ll come up with a name for you later.”

“Oh, do you really mean it? Can I go home with you? Do you want me? Watch me wag my tail in sheer happiness! Careful now, I don’t want to hit you with it! Oh, let me kiss you! You’re a wonderful human! I love you, already!”

“Bless your heart, you’ll be happy with me, I have a nice home with a big back yard that’s fenced in and I’ll spoil you rotten!”

“You will? And you won’t ever abandon me? Or decide you don’t want me, anymore?

I’m so happy! I’ll love you forever and I’ll protect you from strangers and danger!

I’ll guard your home and yard and you and everything! … You’ll see! You won’t be sorry! You just saved my life and I won’t ever forget it!”

Butch here was one of the lucky ones…sadly, millions of dogs just like him and cats too are put to death everyday all across the United States. Their only crime was being born…and unwanted.

Nick, you have such a way in telling a story. I loved it. I bet the ASPCA would love to use it.

    Nick,
another great pet story. You definitely know how to write a tear jerker.I hadn\’t ever been a dog fan until I got married. Now I have learned that animals, dogs and cats especially, have feelings, and they project those feelings quite well in the attention they seek. Its an absolute shame these fine animals are put to sleep by dog pounds everyday. That fact alone is enough to make even the hardest of hearts cry. Again, Fantastic story Nick. Keep em coming old buddy!!!!

Another amazing pet story. I now have 5 cats. My newest is the cutest little stray that got delievered to out door. Maybe I’ll write a piece on it. Here name is Lily..She was delivered the day before Easter. Great Job on this piece. I love the way you write from the animals perspective. Sorry if my thoughts are rambling its going on 1 am here.

Thanks so much everyone! I see so many dogs and cats out on the road that’ve been abandoned or gotten lost. It breaks my heart and the shelters are overflowing with both. The Humane Society here turns away about 20 animals a day because they just don’t have the room…what happens to them?…
A Veterinarian once told me that I can’t save all of them, all I can do is love the ones I have…trust me they’re spoiled rotten!!

What a lovely story! I just love animals, that guy who found him seemed so much like me. I went to the SPCA a few days ago to get a new cat, and I couldn’t make up my mind. I wanted to take all of them. I hate the thought that there are so many cats and dogs out there with no one to care for them.

  • Nick Kenney on Apr 22, 2008

Thanks so much for stopping by Moses. It hurts me deeply too. I’m a big lover of all animals.

  • Lucy Lockett on Apr 24, 2008

I love the awareness your stories bring about animals and care and love they need. You do a wonderful job.

  • Nick Kenney on Apr 24, 2008

Thank you Lucy. Your kind words mean so much…I try so hard to reach peoples hearts and minds. To get them to stop and think before they hit or hurt an animal and to help them realize what the animal feels.

    Lovely story, Nick.

Thank you Louie!! Thanks for stopping by.

  • Dee Huff on Apr 25, 2008

A very touching story Nick. It just tugged at my heartstrings!

  • Nick Kenney on Apr 26, 2008

Thank you Dee and I’m glad to hear it…I did my job properly!

  • Francie on Apr 26, 2008

Great story! Right now there are many looking to love and care for abandoned, stray and lonely animals.

  • Nick Kenney on Apr 27, 2008

I’m delighted to hear that Francie…there are so many here in our area that the Humane Society turns away around 20 a day. I see so many strays/abandoned dogs and cats out on the road everyday and it breaks my heart. Jan and I took an abandoned dog to my mother-in-law years ago and she was loved deeply for the rest of her life. Jan and I’ve also both witnessed truck drivers running over dogs on the side of the road…the cruelty of some just floors me…every dog and cat deserve to be loved and protected. Every one of our cats is a rescue…

you’re gonna make me cry… then go out and save ‘em all!

  • Nick Kenney on May 5, 2008

It’s heartbreaking, isn’t it, M.C. all the unwanted dogs and cats in the world… when I was a little kid it was my dream to someday make enough money to rescue everyone of them and keep them on a big farm and give each of them lots and lots of love…

  • salvatore on May 6, 2008

  • Nick Kenney on May 6, 2008

Thank you Salvatore! I always try to touch my readers hearts and souls…if I have accomplished this then my job is complete!

    Hi Nick,
Your dogs stories are my favorite. I had to hit it again.

    Hi Nick,

I am back checking this one out again. I think it was the first one of your stories I ever read. Enjoyed it again, like a sad old friend.
