Preacher, who really wasn’t a preacher, left the bar, hurt and humiliated.

Everything around him was a blur. He knew Sawyer and Jan were talking to him, but he really couldn’t hear a thing they were saying. His mind was full of the memories of the night before. He recalled that Penny finally admitted that they didn’t get married, but she told Carol that the only reason they didn’t was because she said no. “I told him that I wasn’t going to give him any more until we got married.” Penny announced to Carol in front of the whole bar. “He said, ‘well, let’s go get married. I know a justice of the peace that will marry us tonight.’ I told him ‘no’ because I wanted to wait until he wasn’t drunk.”

Preacher doubted that the story was true, but he couldn’t swear to it. He knew when he got drunk and aroused that he would say almost anything.

Penny then loudly proclaimed, “But we will be getting married, because I’m having his baby.”

Preacher remembered the look on Carol’s face when Penny made that announcement. He thought back on the argument and the cussing and all that was said before Penny finally admitted that she was lying about everything. But the problems were only beginning, because that was the first time that Carol knew of anything going on between Preacher and Penny.

He remembered pulling Carol off to the side and telling her that the only reason he did anything with Penny is because she wouldn’t do anything with him. Before he knew what happened Penny came up behind Carol and said something. Preacher didn’t know what she said, but Carol turned around and slapped her. Preacher grabbed Carol and pulled her back. Carol was leaning forward, trying to break free of Preacher’s grasp when Penny swiped her hand across Carol’s head. The bar went silent for a moment as Carol’s beautiful black hair flew across the room and landed on the shuffle board table. Carol had short black hair underneath that was rolled in tight curls held in place with bobby pins and plastered down on her scalp with some type of gel.

Preacher remembers the shock of seeing her hair on the table and the tight black curls on her head. He let go of her and she bolted out the door. Penny grabbed the wig and threw it at her as she opened the door to leave. Preacher then ran after Carol and caught up with her just outside the barroom door. The door slammed shut behind him and he could hear the roar of laughter inside. He grabbed Carol and said, “Don’t worry, it’s okay.” She didn’t say a word. She unbuttoned her blouse, took off her bra and exposed two gel-filled falsies. She handed him the false breasts and without a word ran to her car and drove away. Everybody inside was wondering what was going on so Sawyer decided he would open the door and see if he could see them. Everyone crowded around the door, trying to get a glimpse of what was going on. What they saw when he opened the door was Preacher standing, in stunned silence, with a bra draped over his shoulder, and a false breast in each hand.
