If you are a hard-working average american adult ,looking at jesus’ life you might be hard pressed to find any parallels to your own.

we’ve all been told in sunday school how jesus came low and walked and lived among us for a time.the basis of the christmas story.well,my observations, along with newer scholar ideas paint a very different christ than what most of us were raised to believe.

let’s start with his childhood.after his well documented birth, the only other mention of his boyhood in the bible is a scene where he is in the temple at age 12.’learning his father’s work.’alright.but what did he do between infancy and 30 when he started his preaching?joseph was his ’stepfather’ if you will and a carpenter.and though it is possible to supposedly own a piece of the cross christ died on-where can one lay hands on something he’s built?being a carpenter’s son i imagine that he would have built many tables, chairs, door frames, etc.i have never heard a reference as to anyone actually owning a work by jesus.did he ever work then,or did it go something like this:

’son, you’ve got to learn my trade.you’re a carpenter’s son and you’ve got to learn the skills…’ joseph says to a child jesus.

‘no,i’ve got more important things to do.you’re not even my real dad.i don’t have to listen to you!’

‘boy,i’ve got alot of children and your mother who depend on me to survive. i need your help to get enough work done to care for them.’

‘god’s work is more important.he will provide.’

however it went down,it looks like poor ol’ joe didn’t get any work outta that kid.

so after mooching off his poor family for 30 years he heads out and during his travels hooks up with mary magdalene.many of you may have been taught, like myself, that mary was a prostitute.and jesus took her in to show her the error of her ways and for some good sex.well, jesus had no income.how was he going to support his preaching circuit? then,as today, the world revolved around money.it is more likely mary owned, possibly through a patriarchal tie, fishing boats and hired fishermen.this business could provide jesus the walking cash he needed and also become useful for his ‘fishers of men’ line that he often pitched.many of the disciples were fishermen and one must wonder if they were originally in mary’s employ and naturally followed their boss and became involved in jesus’ preaching circuit.
