A short story I wrote the other day, I hope people will enjoy reading it.
He ran, along the long street in front of the building. As he kept running he looked back and saw two guys coming through the gate. It didn’t take long for them to spot him. They started running as well. This wasn’t going to work. A long and straight street makes it to hard to lose them, he thought. He turned left in to a smaller street. His clothes were completely soaked by the heavy rain, which made it harder to move. He turned again. And again. He soon didn’t know where he was anymore.
In the dark and in the rain, it was hard to keep track of where he was going. As he ran, turned and tried to get as far away from that place as possible, he still heard the sound of the running and the screaming of the people, who were chasing him. He was getting tired, so he turned in to some small alley, and stopped behind a big garbage container.
Then he waited.
It didn’t take long for the chasers to catch up with him. They ran past the alley, continuing straight, like he hoped they would. He slowly and silently came out of his hiding place, and looked around the corner to see how far ahead they had gotten already. He saw them at the end of the street, standing still, deciding which way to go.
As quiet as he could he started moving in the direction he came from, hoping they wouldn’t notice him. As he had almost turned around the corner, he heard them scream and head back. He started running again. He had arrived in a shopping street, though everything was closed and deserted. Some shops had lights on the show their products in the window, but it was a dead street at that time.
He continued running. He came by a big shopping window, completely dark inside. The dim light coming from the street lanterns, showed a reflection of him in the window as though his twin was running next to him. Even though the pouring rain down the windows made his reflection fuzzy and unclear, he could still see his golden necklace dancing up and down by the movement of his body.
While running and staring at himself in the window, he saw a black bundle appear on the floor in front of his reflection. Before he knew it, his foot hit something solid and he fell. As he fell he saw something, or somebody, move in the shadows of the dark street next to him. That was the last he saw before he reached the floor, hitting his head against the pavement.
For a moment he was out. When he came to, he was being held by two men, his chasers. He looked around, and neither the black object, nor the shady figure in the alley were anywhere to be seen. Then a bigger fear struck him; the familiar feeling around his neck was gone. The feeling of the golden necklace resting down on his skin. He started to struggle.
“Finally we caught you, Mister Jonathan. You are a hard man to catch up with.”
“My name is Johnny, now let me go! I have to chase that bastard Goldie, I am sure it was him who tripped me and stole my necklace!”
“Goldie? Another one of your imaginary friends, Mister Jonathan? You know, you are in serious trouble. First of all, you didn’t take your pills, second of all, you hit an orderly to the ground, and finally you ran away from the ward. It is definitely going to be some time in the isolation cell for you. I bet u still remember that one.”
He tried to struggle to get free, but the two men were just to strong to overpower. Tears were running down his cheeks, because of the loss of his most valued possession. Then he felt a sudden pinch in his neck, as one of the orderlies emptied a syringe with sedative in his bloodstream. Slowly the world turned black in front of his eyes.
