A fictional journal of the last few days of To Kill A Mockingbird’s Tom Robinson.

Dear Journal,

Today I spent the day in jail and preparing for my court hearing tomorrow, with my lawyer, Atticus. We reviewed my possibilities and options. He says he thinks he has enough evidence to prove me innocent, and I most likely will be free, if the trial is fair. I am feeling pretty confident about the situation, but also very nervous and anxious because my life is on the line. Sometimes I just don’t get why such a thing would happen to me. I feel it is unfair because all I was trying to do was help Mayella, because I felt sorry for her, and she thanks me by accusing her of rape. I would never do such a thing, I mean I have family. I’ve also always tried to do the right thing, and don’t fell I deserve this. Another thing that’s bugging me more than anything is my family. Who will take care of them if I’m convicted guilty? How will they make ends meet? Well I bet get some rest so I can be at my best for my hearing tomorrow.

Dear Journal,

It’s about one in the morning and I have given up all hope. When the jury came in without meeting eye contact with me, my heart sank, and my mind went crazy. A million thoughts raced through my head as my heart pounded out of its chest. Could it really be true, I was sentenced to death? Atticus said there is a chance we could have a second hearing with a more fair jury. That really meant nothing to me, because he also said I would probably be free now. I do respect Atticus though it must have taken tons of courage to defend me.

Dear Journal,

I couldn’t sleep at all last night and I think I might have a way to get out of this prison and free. The guards let us outside in the courtyard for thirty minutes a day. When all the men are out there, they have a hard time keeping an eye on all of them. I plan to sneak over to the gate, and when there not looking, quickly climb over the fence to freedom. From there, I can run to a friend’s house, who will transport me to several locations, until I reach the north. I hope it works, because it is my last shot at freedom.
