Just listen to children’s conversations and learn a thing or two…then laugh!

In a multi-age preschool class of 2.5 to 5 years old children, the children are asked to shake hands to their teacher to either greet the teacher or say goodbye.  There was one 5-year old though, his name is Paolo, who would often run to his mother right away when it’s time for him to go home and not say goodbye to his teacher.  One morning, the teacher reminded her students about it saying, “…Whenever it is time for you to go home, please do not run to your mothers or your caregivers right away.  You have to say goodbye to me so that I would know if you went home already and who picked you up.  If you don’t say goodbye properly, I will be looking for you and I will be very worried.  I will be asking everybody if they have seen you and they, too, will not know where you are.”

Several days later, in the same class, there was a group of children eating together.  They were Rita, a 4-year old girl; Mario, a 4-year old boy and Sam, a 5-year old boy.  The two boys were talking about something when suddenly, Rita would imitate everything that Mario would say, so Mario tried to call the teacher.  The unedited conversation went this way :

Mario:  Teacher, Rita keeps on following me!

Rita:  I did not!

Sam:  Yes, you did!

Rita:  I did not!

Mario:  Yes you did!  You know what, liars go to hell, Rita.  That’s what my mom said.

Sam:  Yes, liars go to hell.  That’s what my mom said also, and my dad and my sister and my brother and my whole family said except my driver.

Rita:  No, it’s okay.

Teacher:  No, it’s not okay.

Sam:  Yes, and teacher will get mad because she will look for you.

Mario:  Yes, and she will ask Paolo where you are.  She will say, “Paolo, where is Rita?” and Paolo will say, “I don’t know, maybe she’s in hell!”

Note:  all names are fictitious but this happened in a real class.  By the way, Rita was never convinced that liars go to hell.
