Here is one of the scary stories I grew up with as a child, and one chapter to a book I am trying to decide weather or not to write.
In this story I have used some mohawk expressions and words, Buba, or Baba depending who you talk to means grandfather, or father. Hun-Ioh is an expression of exasperation and Kahnawake is pronouce Gah-Na-Wah-Gay or Gah-Nah-Wah-Gah.

Suddenly after what seemed like an hours worth of knocking, the tapping stopped.

With a huge breath of relief the young girl rolled over once again and tried to sleep, telling herself that the noises we’re normal and that it was just her imagination getting the better out of her.

The as quickly as the sound had stopped, It started again but this time angry and loud. The little girl could hear all of her cousins and family pictures on her grandmother’s wall shake. The girl just clenched the blankets tighter and pulled them over her head and told her self pretend your not here, and it will leave you alone. The tapping filled the room.

“BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP” sounded the clock in her grandparents room saying it was midnight. the knocking sound stopped with the beeps. Still hearing her Buba’s snoring the little girl knew she was safe and that whatever had just happened was best to investigate it in the morning , in the daylight.

“Wake up Baby, I need some help making the cornbread” Gramz said with a loving smile. The little girl got up and wandered into the kitchen after she got dressed. Buba was in the kitchen slicing the steak thin and salt and peppered every steak. Gramz’s watched carefully as the her grand baby climbed up on to the kitchen stool and started cutting up slices of cucumbers and tomatoes with her dull knife.

“Did anyone hear anything last night?” pondered the little girl out loud. “No, said Gramz. Buba said nothing as he peppered the steaks.

” Snooze, did you hear something last night?” asked Buba Quietly as he continued to slice some more steaks.

“I heard this tapping sound on the window and it got louder and louder, and then it sounded like it was filling the room.”

“hm-mm” Buba didn’t look up from his task, “You didn’t go look out the window, or get out of bed did you?”

“No Buba, Gramz and you told me to go to bed, so I listened and stayed there.” replied the little girl.

“That’s a smart baby, Now Tara, Tatum, This, Tiffy, Susie! Baby can you set the table, please.” Gramz replied as she mixed the scalding hot cornbread mixture with her hands.

After she had set the table, the family started to arrive, first the little girls parents who hugged her and asked about how the sleepover was like they always did. Then her uncle and his 3 daughters, then her aunty and her 2 older cousins. After everyone arrived the meal started. Everyone ate, played together or got caught up on family news.

Once everyone had left and Buba went for a walk around the garden, the little girl ran up to him and joined him in his walk.

“Buba do you know what was making that tapping sound? I asked Gramz and she said it was a tree but the tapping was coming from the other window, the one facing the drive way.”

“Baby girl, its an old story and I am glad that you stayed in bed. The thing that made those sounds was after you. If you had peaked out of the window at it, it would have taken you away and then we would never see you again.”

The little girl slipped her hand into his and said ” Thank you Buba, I love you. Now that I know that I won’t ever look out the window when I hear tapping like that again.”

“There’s one more thing, I remember you telling me that you lost some things, we’ll if it was a bad thing, it will have returned your belongings. When you go home look where everything should be and if it is back then you’ll know for sure.”

“Okay, Buba I will check it out. I’ll be right back.” with that she raced away from the garden and right into her parents home. Sure enough everything was right back where it should have been. The little girl ran and asked her mother if she had moved anything, and she hadn’t.

Their really was something after me. And now she knew.

It happened to her 3 more times in her life so far, twice when she was a teenager and once in her twenties. Buba never said that whatever it is that was after her, would give up. This is a true story, believe it if you want to, don’t if it seems to strange. Just remember there are strange things that happen that for the most part can not be explained in the best of logic.
