Dear Diary,

This is my very first diary entry. I will start off by introducing myself, my name is Kateri Tekakwitha. I was born in 1656. I am 24 years old now and I live with my uncle in Ossemenon. My uncle is chief of the Turtle-clan. The reason why I am living with my uncle is because in 1660 my father, mother and brother passed away from smallpox I had the disease but I survived with scares and now I am partly blind. Any ways let’s try to forget about the past and focus on the present. Well since my uncle is chief of Turtle-clan so many warriors I mean like 10 purposed to me but, of course I say no.

About a month ago my uncle tried to force me to marry an Iroquois man but I refused because when I was about 18 or 19 I fell in love with a man that was also Iroquois and he broke my heart. I am trying to forget about him but it seems like my heart will never heal. Anyways a lot of people I knew called me many nicknames such as “The Mohawk maiden”, “The Pure and Tender Lily” and “The fairest flower among true men” Sometimes it gets on my nerves! Well this is my first and final diary entry. I died in 1680.
