A child underdog rises to the top in this short story – poem.
King of the Blacktop
Back at a school that goes by the name of Tower Grove Christian.
It was the 5th of May on a sunny Friday afternoon.
The sound of children’s laughter filled the teachers ears as she read a tabloid.
The boys who attended were having a weekly competition to see who would be King of the Blacktop.
Even though everyone there was different the Principal ordered the kids to wear uniforms.
For it was a Private School.
A boy named John was determined to be king this week since he had never been since he enrolled in the 1st grade and he wanted things to be different.
He had attended the fair school for 5 years and had always lost in the semi-finals.
The boys used a dodge ball bigger than their stomachs.
The competitors had to kick the ball high and see how long it would take to fall.
Of course none of the girls would be impressed.
The boy named John had defeated most of his competitors and only broke 2 sweats.
John had just beaten the former king Nathan and thrust his fists high into the air.
Except there was another.
A kid named Jordan stepped up to the challenge.
He was the new kid at Tower Grove.
Jordan was no taller than John but a WHOLE lot stronger.
A challenger John had not expected.
He grabbed the ball and kicked with incredible strength. The ball went up in the sky, past the clouds, and fell down to earth with a loud ‘Bink’.
John became nervous because he had never laid his eyes on such an admirable feat.
Soon the boy named John mustered all of his strength to his right leg, picked up the ball, and KICKED IT! The ball rocketed past the clouds, past the stratosphere, past earths orbit, and past the moon.
The ball wouldn’t have come back if it didn’t ricochet off of an alien spaceship and speed back down to make an earth shattering landing with a loud ‘SKIDOOSH’.
After everyone had witnessed the whole event.
The former king Brandon had removed his paper crown off of his head and threw it away instead he picked up the largest piece of the ball that was left and crowned the boy named John with it.
The champion stood proudly onto a dumpster and said “I am King of the Blacktop.”
