Lady was a small dog compared to Duke, her grandfather, or Heine her dad. In the dog world they call it the sire.
Lady was a very nice well mannered dog and she was easy to train, but i did not take her training far enough, since at the time we were managing an orchard and were very busy, A good excuse! Lady had a very good nose and could smell the birds from further way than Heine could, which was great.
The problem was we never took time to take her hunting enough, and she was not very good on retrieving like Heine, so we always took Heine. Believe it or not she was a very good mouser and gogher catcher. In an orchard mice do a lot of damage to the trees, in the winter they will make a nest around the trunk of the trees and eat the bark for their winter food. That is why we would spend many man hours cleaning the trash and dead grass from around the tree trunks before winter sets in, then the mice have no where to make a nest. But if they did Lady would find them, they were just one bite for her.
We had about ten acres of new apple tres planted, we had to keep a constant watch on them to keep out the gophers and mice. The kids including my daughter would take Lady into the orchard to hunt for mice every day after school, by doing that we were able to control the mouse population.
