A short story about an unlucky victim on the night of the Lantern Festival.

Friday night and me and my mates are having a great time! We have decided to come to Victoria Park tonight to celebrate the Moon Festival. The atmosphere in the air has a festive mood to it and the lanterns are lighting up the entire park – denying the dark any space. “Hey Nigel, let’s go get some drinks” Jennifer says.

“Sure, why not. Lets go guys!”  We shuffle through the jam packed park of people.  We try to achieve the impossible task of sticking together, but in this swarm of people, we just can’t do it. We are separated and I am alone. I don’t panic because I know that we will meet again at the drinks stand. I arrive at the drinks stand and they still haven’t gotten here so I order myself a drink. I ask the stall owner for a suggestion and she recommends the ‘elixir of life’ – a traditional Chinese Cocktail. I drink it and then….

I wake up being carried by my limbs. I hear chanting and I have no idea where I am. It is dark and it is seriously cold. I have no memory of what happened after I had that drink. I was drugged! These people want to hurt me!

I am taken to a chamber and am tied to a chair.  “Whats Happening!? Why did you take me away”

“You are a descendant of the Lady Chang Er. Every year during the moon festival we choose one of her descendants to kill as a punishment to her bad doings.” The voice echoes through the darkness.

“Who the hell is Lady Chang Er?”

“You have inherited her ignorance I see. Over 4000 years ago a lady called Chang Er had selfishly stolen an immortality pill, which rightly belonged to the king. See all these lanterns hanging here? These are your ancestors. And soon you will join them”

“What, your going to turn me into a lantern? I would like to see that!” Keeping my cool, trying to sound brave. A lot more brave than I’m feeling.

“After we have completed the rituals”

I am taken to a separate room then gagged. I try to yell out but the gag is too tight! Ten minutes later somebody enters the room, but I can not see who. There are some more chantings and then somebody whips me on my back. I fall to the floor and whimper. The man who whipped me pushes me back up then holds my head between his hands. I feel like I am dissolving! What is he doing to me?! I try to fight back but my hands are tied up. I am doomed to be a lantern for eternity! I can not feel a thing except fear. Then – nothing.
