I recently rediscovered this short story I wrote one year ago. Enjoy
It was just a normal morning. I woke up at 8 am stretching my muscles and
getting ready for another day. It was 2 days after Christmas, so there was no
school work to worry about. I switched on the light in order to continue reading
my new book, which I got as a Christmas present. But the light did not work today,
so i went to the fridge to get myself a cold glass of water. As the water was not cold,
i thought about the possibility that the fuse has blown, so I went downstairs to check
it.
“That’s weird, the fuss is alright but there’s no electricity at all”, I thought to myself
becoming more aware of the reality. Listening to my old battery radio cleared up
my last doubts: There was a major failure in our town’s energy grid.
Being all alone without PC, TV, cooled Food and all the other things you need to live
I started to think about what people used to do when there was no energy at all.
“The juice has taken total control over me, but I will proof that I can live without it”,
I promised myself knowing it was going to be the toughest time of my life.
I decided to distract myself by going to the gym, training my muscles and joking
around with my friends.
As I found out, this things get boring after three hours. For a change I could have
actually read my book if we haven’t been living in a basement flat where I had no
light at all.
But there was more to worry about than the boredom e.g the food problem which
could only be solved by eating things that don’t need a fridge or a cooking station.
You can believe me, eating bread for a week is not that funny. Besides I needed
my protein. But never mind, I had to make the best of the new situation, so I tried
to get familiar with it.
To my surprise it was easier than I had expected.
I guess if you have to stand a situation anyway,
it is not that difficult to eventually accept it. I found a lot of time to think
about myself and the way the society is influenced by modern technology.
As days gone by, I was not even interested in getting my old life back.
In my new life I had more time to spend with my friends, so I got closer to each
of them, but most important was that I got more aware of myself and started seeing
life in a new way.
“This power failure has become a real nice thing”, I told my father one afternoon.
“Speaking of power, we have repaired the grid so we will get our energy back
till evening.”, my father responded being proud of his and the other electricians’
work, which took them two weeks.
“Oh, nice work dad”, I applauded him.
“So, mum bought us a nice big pizza, I’m sure you want to have some of it for dinner.”
“Thanks, dad, but I prefer having a few slices of bread with butter for dinner today”
