A personal essay involving my experience with a chat room con artist. I was a recent college graduate when I went online for friendship. What I found was more of deceit. I learned a hard lesson, which always stays with me even today.

Ten years ago, I had just graduated from college. I was staying in my apartment for another week before I moved out and back home.

When I didn’t’ have anything to do, I began talking online with other women. I thought it would be safe. One afternoon, I started a conversation with a young woman named Chasisty. We talked about a variety of different things in the thirty minutes. I soon found out that she lived in Hot Springs, Arkansas. I was thinking that she lived close to Columbia, Missouri.

One night after talking with her, I decided to drive down there for a few days. I thought it would be okay, but I was naïve. It was a stormy night. That should have been a sign for me to turn back. Unfortunately, I kept driving.

When I finally arrived at her place, she was all over me. I’m not like that. I told her that I was feeling comfortable. She finally backed off. I slept on her couch.

The next morning, we went to McDonalds and she began telling me about her sister, who she says was being abused by her boyfriend. Chasisty was concerned about her sister and wanted somehow to help out her sister, but she didn’t have a car. I felt bad.

Later that morning, we drove around Hot Springs. It was a nice town.

Sometime later, she kept telling me how she really wanted to help her sister. I was thinking I could help her out by driving out there. She then told me her sister lived in Tennessee. I thought that it wasn’t too bad of a drive. Tennessee borders Arkansas.

I eventually agreed to help. We soon got into my car and I started driving. As we crossed into Tennessee, Chasisty told me that her sister lived on the eastern part of the state. I was getting frustrated at that point, because Tennessee is a very long state.

I kept thinking about just leaving Chasisty at a gas station. I was so mad. She told me that she didn’t have a license, so I had to drive the whole way.

When we finally arrived at her sister’s house, I was so tired. We picked her up and I told them I was exhausted and was going to a hotel room, so I could get some sleep.
