About my friend who lived the most incredible life one can imagine to live.
You know, listening to a story like this you feel like you have never lived at all. My only question was: ‘Why didn’t you fight?’ But Luke fought. He was the only one to fight with host families when they hit him or injured him. When he was eleven he nearly killed his carer for beating him up all the time. Later he got into trouble for fighting on the streets. He couldn’t control himself and not a single fight went without him breaking somebody’s hand or a rib.
He was one of a group of orphans who fought with the government for better conditions and a better caring system. It worked, but not for him. ‘Many orphans live in better conditions nowadays but not when I was there’.
I have always claimed my life to be exciting and dangerous until now. Compared to Luke I hardly lived. And, comparing himself to me, he is not proud of what he went through. He wishes it was all different. He wishes he could have a family and a girlfriend. All his life he has only liked one girl and he broke up with her because it was too hard to tell her about his life. ‘She didn’t deserve to live with it’, he said.
