A short piece of fiction depicting a distopian future.

June 2, 2307

Today they announced the results of the election of the new Global Director. This has led some to be much more aware of the political system of our world, and, frankly, most of us don’t know what to believe. I do not know a single person who voted for Frank Sicnerman as GD and yet the “results” from our area say that he won by a landslide.  In historical times they used this stuff called paper to keep track of everything. It was a substance that you could hold in your hand, and it was nearly impossible to change what it said. I have been to some of the archives where they still have some of this stuff and it is truly remarkable. Now the facts in the news can change in minutes to reflect whatever they want.

As a history major I know many things that the common man does not. For example, I know the fact that what we purport to be democracy is in truth more like the form of government that used to be called communism, and that The United Citizens State (UCS) started as a country called America, that was a true democracy for a long time until the digital age started in 2050 and led to a change in the meaning of truth. This digital age allowed the government to switch the numbers and manipulate them to prove to the common man that the GD was elected by the majority even if he wasn’t.

The reality of this world is even more frightening than the book 1984 by George Orwell, which was written in 1949, and is still used to frighten those who wish to change the system. In 1984 at least the loss of individuality was what the stated aim was; now the government is touting the advantages of individuality while pressing us all into increasingly less varied lifestyles. While there are hundreds of different jobs, most of them do the same thing just under different names, and everyone does the same thing once they get out of work. Go to the community center, have dinner, play a few of the games such as chess and checkers, with the others, do something creative or intellectual for “personal improvement period” and then go home, listen to the reports, get clean, and go to sleep. The morning is no more varied. Get up, get dressed, exercise for the “personal fitness period,” eat breakfast, go to work or school.
