A short story about how love is a bet and how is that so that it can never be avoided. If you lose, you’ll be thrown into eternal despair. But if you win, you’ll be the happiest person in the world.

Every single day, I’d find myself on the busy streets on my homeland at Mexico after my working hours. Even when the streets are bustling with people all about, I’d be all alone, looking at how vibrant the small city is and how blissful is it when a couple hold their hands whispering sweet nothings to each other that pass by me as though I’m just a breeze of air in their life. In this bustling city where everything is extremely quick-paced, I always wondered why it was that only me (and I meant… well not really just I but it’s quite a sight actually…) that I had to be a loner walking on the noisy streets every day after work.

I remembered almost five years ago when my parents both died in a car crash, I was in a total wreck. The world was just falling upon me and nothing was falling into their places as they were supposed to be.  I always wished and wished and wished that one day, I’d have a chance to hold another person’s hand. I wished for another person who will become the third most important family of mine, after the loss of both my closest family back then.  But Heaven hasn’t been all kind and saintly to me. Five years… I’ve been waiting for five years for the girl of my dreams to appear before me. I hoped that I would be someone’s Prince Charming. But that, over the five lonely years were just deemed my adulthood impracticalities. I’ve always thought that, “I’ll find a girl that’ll appreciate my talent some way or another someday!” and I’ve lived with that impression for five years that it had really seemed improbable for it to happen.

Thinking of everything that was flashing through my mind in a single instant, I didn’t actually noticed that I bumped into someone. I heard a loud; “Ouch!” and I turned my head back only to be instilled with shock. I saw what I didn’t expect to see most at that moment. I saw a woman of around my age. That first glance and eye contact that we had with each other was the mark of the start of everything that I’ve always longed for. Sparks flew when our eyes met and the burning passion of flame in me starting burning brightly again. I’ve never believed love at first sight before this. I had never once thought of that I’ll actually be a recipient for this extraordinary affair. At that single moment, something came over me when the other party finally spoke. But suddenly, when I actually returned to my normal self after being surprised with myself, I actually remembered something. That woman was Jessica that I’ve bumped into and she was actually a high school classmate of mine! Suddenly, realization too came over her and she recognized me. Having not met a friend from my school days since ages ago, I was extremely happy that she actually accepted my invitation for a drink at the nearby bar.
