There is a strange phenomenon whereby married women get into prostitution. This comes mainly because of poverty. Wives, owing to desperation and peer pressure, resort to prostitution, if only to put bread on the table, pay bills, and provide an education for the children. This is a fictional article presenting a story that depicts the life of a married woman, who resorts to prostitution in order to avail food on the table for her family.
Following his high school education in 1981, Tom joined one of the top commercial colleges in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, for a Sales and Marketing Diploma course. By September 1982, he was done. Shortly after that, in November 1982, he landed a very good job as a Marketing Executive in an international company. This was a company that had just landed in the country, and was in the business of selling nutritional supplements.
Tom excelled at his job, and by July 1989, he was the Marketing Director of the company. This post came with benefits such as a company car, company house, full medical cover, and full education assistance for up to 4 children.
In December 1989, he wedded his long-time girl-friend, Magdalene. Life was very good for the first 3 years. Come July 1993, the company wound up their business in Kenya. That left Tom job-less with a wife and 3-year-old son, Calvin.
This job-loss came as a very heavy blow to Tom, and he got depressed. He had no alternative than to move to one of the lowest residential area in Nairobi. It was such a heavy drop, that the whole family was shell-shocked.
Magdalene had been a house-wife all along. With Tom depressed, Magdalene felt that she had to find a way out, so as to have bread on the table, pay bills, and also plan for the education of their only son.
She resorted to begging in the Nairobi Central Business District. That didn’t fetch her much. They could barely put food on the table.
With time, a few neighbors noticed her, and questioned her on her survival tactics. They told her that they had just the best income opportunity to share with her. Julia, Sarah and Violet invited her to Violet’s house for a business presentation. She was excited!
What she heard shocked her. They were introducing her to prostitution!
“But I’m a happily married woman!”, Magdalene said.
“We know that. Are we not also happily married? In fact our husbands know very well what we are doing, and they approve of it. At the end of the day, we provide for the family”, replied Sarah.
Each of the ladies gave stories of the levels of income they were able to realize every month. They made between 300.00 and 600.00 US Dollars each and every month.
They went ahead and coached her on the killer strategies.
