So I just did a practice response to the 2008 English School Certificate Extended response
Basically writing a short story with one of the given starting lines.
A high wall and an iron gate protected the house. Strands of cobweb and bats hanging from the ceiling almost in every corner. It was the perfect attraction to use to unleash my prank on my friends.
Today was the day the town held the Annual Spring Festival. As usual, it was always held near the end of October, around Halloween. There were rides and stalls, all shapes and sizes, as far as the eye could see. People came from all parts of the country just to be part of the special event, but my main reason for attending was not to just have a good time but to prank my friends, Eddie and Joe. Their last prank was a combined one, which ended up with me not getting enough sleep for almost a week. During that week, I had been scared the living daylights out of me. Eddie and Joe had been my best friends since Kindergarten and for as long as I could remember we had been pranking each other all our lives although occasionally pranking the teachers at school was fun as well.
It was almost six o’clock, the perfect time to get away from selling tickets to my ride and to setup my prank. At this time, everyone usually attended the Spring Dance, so I had in advance, invited Eddie and Joe to my attraction at six. I raced inside and climbed the ladder to the second floor. I grabbed the nearby bucket of cockroaches which I had prepared earlier and placed it right over the hole where the train cart would ascend to the second story.
I waited.
It seemed like forever before they would arrive. Suddenly, I heard their familiar voices and the familiar sound of the train cart leaving the starting point. Their screams of laughter echoed closer and closer. As I saw Eddie and Joe’s head pop out through the gap I began dumping the contents of the bucket on top of them. That’s when they really started screaming. What really enhanced the situation was it was almost pitch dark and they couldn’t really identify what was on them.
Suddenly, without warning my foot slipped and I ended up dangling from a rung on the two metre ladder. Luckily, i didn’t drop to the bottom, but I couldn’t move without some help.
“Help!” I cried, “I’m stuck.”
I wasn’t sure whether they heard me or not but moments later after the train cart had returned to the start, I heard some running feet towards my direction. Within seconds they found me stuck on the ladder.
“Ah, Nice prank, man.” said Joe, “but it was kind of dangerous. You almost got yourself scared to death.”
“You guys know what? I think we should stick with pranking the teachers instead.” I said.
They both nodded in agreement. We left the cockroach infested attraction and joined the rest of the community at the Spring Dance.
