Mr. Scamperly’s adventures in the shops in town.
Mr. Scamperly is very curious about what goes on in the old castle. People coming to visit the tall slender man with the top hat and white gloves. There is also a lady living there, in whom he has become very interested. She comes to the door, and greets the people who have come to visit. She says ,”welcome to Fairview Manor”, to all who enter there. Fairview Manor, Mr. Scamperly thought to himself, what a lovely name for the old castle. It was through her conversations that he learned much about the place in which he now lived. With the help of their guests as they were leaving the old castle, with a hearty goodbye, he learned that the man with the top hat and white gloves was named Fredrick. He would like to know the ladies name as well, but he had not the opportunity to hear it spoken. Mr. Scamperly hurried back to his hole behind the holly bush because just at that time they were starting up those awful black contraptions with the wheels, and gold lights. The horses, and men who drove them did not pay much attention to where they were going, or upon whom they might splash with mud, or trample.
Mr. Scamperly began to fantasize about the fact that he could be living with royalty. How by living under the stairs, he would be of royal blood. A distant cousin of course, but never the less, of the royal family blood lines. The lady dressed in beautiful flowing gowns, although he had not yet seen a crown. She had so many guests it was as if she were holding court. Many times when was close to the door he could smell tea and scones, so he knew her to be a lady of refinement. The man of the house was definitely a gentleman, you could easily tell by his dress. His top hat, white gloves, and walking stick where symbols of fine gentlemanly attire. All of these things he thought to himself as he puffed himself up higher, and higher with the fantasy. He decided to dress in his very best clothing each day, as not to be an embarrassment to them. He would also scour the woods for the best walking stick for himself that he could find. He had already begun to have tea and scones, promptly at 4:00pm in the afternoon. By copying their manners he felt sure he would fit in to the royal family. Mr. Scamperly even got up the courage to investigate the contraption with the horses, and wheels that he had heard her call, a carriage.
