A tale about apples, colors and synesthesia.

Dad: Son, which is the color of the apples?
Son: The apples are blue, daddy, right?
Dad: Do you think so? I think this apple is red, don’t you?
Son: That apple is red, but apples are blue!
Dad: Why do you think that apples are blue, son?
Son: I don’t know, apples have red, green or yellow peel, but all of them are blue, I feel blue when I imagine apples.

I had that little conversation with my dad when I was six years old and it was the first time that I thought about my synesthesia, but, of course, I didn’t know what it was until I grew up and learn a bit of it.

Synesthesia is a mix of sensations, that means synesthetes can “see” when they listen sounds or even think words, numbers, letters, concepts… But, seeing is not the only kind of synesthesia, some of us can feel colors when in others can evoke taste sensations in their mouth.

This experience is automatic and involuntary. You could think it is just a simple asociation but it is more like having different zones of the brain connected to the same sense, and, as normal people always see, for example, the red color “red”, we always feel the same color when we hear something, for example, for me, since I was born, the letter “A” is red, the word ”apple” is blue, the number “5″ is brown and the sound of an electric guitar is a scale of greens trending to yellow depending on the tone of the notes.

It doesn’t means that every synesthete sees the same color as me when hearing the same things, each of us feels different, maybe you don’t like apples when I like them, maybe other synesthete “sees” purple and not blue when thinking in apples, etc.

So… which is the color of the apples… for you?
