A Lesson Learned.
My husband and I had a friend over recently who asked me to look a person for him. I graciously accepted and asked what the name was, little did I know it was a celebrity, that was the beginning of an important lesson. I got the name and immediately went to Google and typed in the name of the person he was looking for. He got the information he wanted so I started to close down the laptop because I was done working for the day. When I clicked to close the website all hell broke loose. I was informed that the laptop had encountered a Trojan Virus and was infected. It showed that the whole C and D drives were infected and to download a fix for the Viruses, I panicked. The computer was telling me to download the Internet Protection Virus but, my husband yelled from behind me and said “unplug the internet” I followed his direction and after I did, the laptop continued to ask me to download this virus and I kept denying the prompts, I was afraid to turn off my computer due to the thing taking over the laptop. I started calling people who could fix it. First I called the Geek Squad; they wanted $150 to fix it from a remote location. The Geek Squad did tell me I could turn off my laptop and the virus would not continue to take it over, so I did.

I said “NO WAY” and hung up to call someone else who wanted $99.When I woke up and went to work the next day I asked the boss if I could call our computer guru and get some advice. He said yes. I called and he told me to download the Malwarebytes anti-virus and save it to a disc and he could not guarantee that it would get fixed. So I called Malwarebytes and they told me the computer was already infected and that I should take it to a professional who could remove the virus. So I called the dealer where I purchased the computer and told them what happened. They asked me which computer I purchased and I told him. He said your computer has a recovery button and you can erase everything and start over and the computer should be safe. Unbelievable, I called my husband and told him what to do only I added a twist. He went into safe mode and deleted the files of this Internet Protection Virus and then goes to the recycle bin and empties it. Shut down the computer and go back in and do the recovery button and call me back. It was his idea to use the safe mode on the computer which was a good call. He called me back at work and said it worked. Only dilemma was that I had to go back and start all over with recovering my work. Luckily I do not save any of my documents, pictures ect. on the laptop cause it slows down the performance, I use an external drive so all I had to do was redo all the passwords and stuff. I called my cousin who is a computer tech and told him my story and he tells me he wants to hire my husband and I and that we were smart in the way we handled the situation.
The lesson my friend is never go to a celebrity website and get the right information before you do someone a favor on your computer.
