A story of male menopause and a Toyota Supra 3.0 turbo and what not to do with it!

The race! My last and final race.

Being a Motor Mechanic by trade which entails driving all manor of different cars of all manufacture is a pr-requisite, that however does not mean you are a great driver? If I was asked the question,

“Are you a good driver?”

I would reply,

“I think so”

During my apprenticeship as a Motor Mechanic I had a love affair with the Ford Capri a rear wheel drive Coupe that was fast but did not go around corners! Ask any Capri owner they will tell you the same thing. Trust me I got myself in plenty of trouble racing around the streets of London and Essex in quintessential ’Boy Racer Style”

As with all men I grew up (Hopefully) and being a boy racer was not on my list of requirements. I drove company cars mainly Volvo’s and settled down into a married life as with most people. Then came along the ’Male Menopause” I wanted a Toyota Supra Turbo 3.0 6 Cylinder 24v Sports Coupe.

The car I found was the last of the Toyota Supra Turbo’s MKII’s in fact I researched the chassis number and it was a part of the last 100 MKII’s ever built. My then wife was more than happy for me to have my dream car, it was 8 years old and a newer Supra Turbo model had been on sale for many a year. Therefore the car was affordable.

The point of the story is it taught me a lesson of never ever to race on public roads and put people’s lives in danger! However I will relate to you my last ever race!

I worked for an Mechanical Breakdown insurance company in Mansfield as a ‘Technical Back Up Engineer’ I lived however in the Derbyshire Dales, I will relate the race to you but if questioned by Police it’s a work of fiction as my previous writings will back me up.

I left work after a particularly stressful day and was glad to get into the Supra and adjust the Grey leather seat as I settled down for the hour long journey home. The Supra started on the button as always and I set off for home. Driving along a dual carriage way a BMW M5 convertible braked sharply in front of me causing me to brake for no apparent reason.

Very sound advice in the conclusion. And even the best of race drivers sometimes get killed. I remember the death of the son of a friend of mine Gilles Villenueve. Accidents do happen!

Glad you got out of that one safe and sound. The young male lust for speed and fast cars does seem to ease with age. When I was a young man I had a 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlas convertible, jet black with red interior, 442 cc engine, 4 speed on the floor Hurst shift, spinner spoke wheels, 4 barrel exhaust and man could that baby fly. While sitting at a traffic light and revving the engine, the suspension would just rise in the air. Oh what a feeling!

The foolishness of youth, you were very lucky, and fortunately able to share it with us thanks for the read
