Short Story.
Have you ever had Liver?
Being raised in a household of very meager means, I used to have Liver served to me all the time as a child. I absolutely hated it. My Mother would tell me I couldn’t leave the table until I finished it, but I knew I could outlast her. Sooner or later, it was going to be time for bed. Today; I can’t even find Liver in the super market and thank God for that. It is a foul disgusting food that never should have graced the shelves in the first place.
Of course though; that was the 60’s and in the 60’s I used to love Friday nights. We couldn’t eat meat as Catholics and one thing was always certain on Friday nights… No Liver! My Mom used to order fried fish from this great place called Ritzy’s. Phenomenal. It wasn’t just phenomenal because it wasn’t Liver, this place had the greatest seafood in the world. It’s not just the memory as a child that brings me to that conclusion, but I had the great fortune to get some of their food again 25 years later in the late 80’s. But alas, as the new millennium came upon us, they have closed. It’s such a pain in my old American Heart to see things of this nature leaving and new fast foods or take out Chinese coming in.
Everything is hurried. Everything is processed. We are in such a great rush to go nowhere and do nothing. We have to get back to our desks quickly so we can play the rest of our game on Face Book or Pogo. There are executives in government watching Porno on their computers all day. What ever happened to the days of the door to door salesman giving us a demonstration of their vacuum cleaner?
How about the Chinese Dry Cleaner? Or the guy who used to throw the doe in the air and toss it round in his hands to shape a pizza pie?
What happened to my wonderful America? I simply want it back … but I know in my heart it’s gone and it can never return. Shame really that the youth of today never got the chance to experience it. Playing “Kick the Can” with all the kids in the neighborhood in the street. Or “Whiffle Ball”, “Kick Ball”, “Hide & Seek.” There’s no social standing anymore for kids. They lock themselves in their room with their TV and their X-Box and their world is one of loneliness and discontent. You gotta learn that when you have a runny nose and some kid picks on you, you tell him to shut up or you’ll wipe it on his shirt.
What are we doing to ourselves?
I keep asking myself why we came this direction. We’re lost in this forest and rather than explore it to find our way out like we used to, we flip on a GPS System and simply follow it’s direction. Where’s the educational experience in that? This is why men have a tendency to not ask directions. They know that eventually they’ll notice something they are familiar with and all will be fine. It’s the adventure of the exploration we need. Or at least that’s me. Unfortunately, for many, they’ve decided to omit the challenge and go with the tech flow. I just never saw the advantage in it.
I have a friend I met on Face Book. As it turns out, Face Book is most certainly a place to meet new people. This particular friend couldn’t be more different than I am. He’s a very bull headed Liberal and I am a very bull headed conservative. I know that being Liberal doesn’t always mean you will vote Democrat, but it does pretty much follow that trend. Same goes the other way. I’m not a Party Republican, but I do tend to vote their party as it closest resembles my values.
I guess I simply don’t understand things like Trans-sexuality and Homosexuality. I don’t understand things like Atheism and moving away from God. I used to sing for a Rock & Roll Band as Mick Jagger told me it was the only thing a poor boy could do successfully. Well, I never did become as successful as he did but I did understand why he would write a song called “Sympathy for the Devil!” Though being a Rocker, a drug user, a cigarette smoker and drunkard; it led me to be highly promiscuous as well. In this; as it turns out, a person breaks a lot of hearts. One day comes when you realize all your sins and that day tends to arrive too late.
Too late for me it seems, but never too late for the Lord. He awaits us all to invite him into their lives and hearts. He awaits us all to eventually see his great light and follow him in our own lives. I have done this and I can tell you, it’s an uplifting experience. As I sit here right now, I can honestly tell you that I still make plenty of mistakes I am not proud of. I know I’m not pleasing my Lord. But, I’m trying.
This isn’t a letter professing my new evangelistic ways, I’m simply saying I’ve managed to make a change. However, in this change, I’ve not renewed any real values. I’ve dropped a few that needed to go, but my old value system remains in tact. It’s that value system that makes me conservative. It’s that value system that makes me want back what I had in my youth. The thought of using foul language in front of an elder ever was pure craziness. We respected the elders. We did our best to be well mannered and appreciative of others. It was simply in our standards.
The kids today have no values. They have no manners. No common courtesy. They are completely lost. I want to save them but they are living in a world that has gone astray. They learn about this lost world in their classrooms as children and they have this nonsense pumped into their skulls all the way into college. I for one don’t want anyone teaching my children political theory. I want them teaching my kids the actual facts and let them make up their own minds. Throw away the GPS System. Allow my children to think for themselves and enjoy the exploration of the journey.
My new Liberal friend calls me a Neo-Con. He obviously doesn’t know the meaning of this word. Here is a link to its explanation. http://conservapedia.com/Neoconservatism.
I couldn’t be farther from this.
I believe in far less government. In fact, no government at all would work for me, but I know we need “Some” structure or we have nothing. I know the highways are essential and someone needs to tend to these. I’d actually prefer we sell all the interstates to private sector companies and have them put up toll booths. This way, the road would forever be flawless and plenty of people would have jobs keeping them that way.
I believe “Congress Shall make No Law” PERIOD; Unless it’s absolutely necessary.
Ahhhh … The Good Old Days. When Congress only worked Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as the rest of the week was spent getting back and forth from their loving families for and from the week end.
Bring back The Slinky, Super Ball, Attach to Keds Roller Skate Wheels. Batman costumes… (Oh yea… We probably still have those!) Bring back the toaster and English Muffins… (Huh? We still have those too?) Well things are looking up after all.
Don’t forget how to explore the Journey folks. After all: Isn’t that what Life is supposed to be about?
