A Story I wrote about a scary experience I had.
Boom! We heard the door slam as our parents left the house. They got into the car as their seatbelts clicked. We heard the roar of the engine echo as the car started. As the car was put into reverse, we watched it pull slowly down the drive way as it disappeared into the darkness.
As hours passed we started to worry because our parents had said they would be home by eight o’clock and it was already ten. We stared out the window hoping to see their silver car pull up the drive way, but it didn’t. The more time that passed the more we worried. We were as scared as a fly about to be smacked into the wall. We tried to call them, but every time we did, all we heard was there sweet soft voices on the answering machine.
It seemed as though time had stopped. As we stared at the clock it seemed as though the hands had stopped moving. They were absolutely still for what felt like an eternity, finally one hand on the clock moved indicating that one minute had passed. As we sat in silence, we looked every time we heard a car passing. Then we heard a loud car coming down our street thinking this car would race past our house like all the others, but this time it stopped. We heard the screaming engine slowly get lower and lower until it was just a mere whisper. We looked out the window to see a black and white car with flashing lights on the top, shinning brighter than the sun. We stared in shock as we realized that this was no ordinary car, this was a police car. “Why are the police in front of our house?” we thought to ourselves. As we were thinking, we heard another car pull up, and then another, in a manner of minutes there were five cars in front of our house, three of them being police cars. We had no idea why they were all there.
We called our parents again, but they still didn’t answer. We paced back and forth wondering what we should do. Then, we decided to call our friends that lived just a few houses away. They didn’t answer but we just kept calling. Finally, after calling four times, they answered. We asked them to come over, and they said they would.
When we heard the doorbell ring it sent shivers down our spines, we opened the door hoping that it would be our neighbors. I thrust open the door, and saw two familiar faces, I felt so relieved. My friend entered our house slowly. She looked really scared. Her mother walked back down the front steps, her high-heels clacking as we slammed the door behind her. She walked over to talk to the police. We stared out the window trying to read her lips to find out what was happening. We couldn’t make sense of anything because we only understood a few words at a time. Finally she walked up the steps and told us what they had said.
“It’s going to be all right, your next door neighbors are being arrested, because they have been selling stolen cars, most of their furniture is stolen, and they bounced $30,000 in checks, when they paid for the house,” she said.
We stared in shock, watching her cold white face move as if she were saying something but we were not paying attention. A few minutes later the ring of the phone broke the silence. I jumped up to answer it. My parents said they would be home in a few minutes. They had gone to see a movie and forgotten to tell us. Our neighbors stayed with us until they got home.
We heard another car pull up the driveway, and the sound of our garage door opening. We watched our parents come in, as our neighbors went quietly out the front door. We were all so tired that we went to our bedrooms and fell asleep within moments.
It ended alright but it was still very scary. I am glad they weren’t coming to arrest us. I am grateful that everything was ok. I hope that I never have to see the police in front of my house again.
