A story from March 2011 that I never got around to publishing.
Monessen Prevails in Last-Second Thriller
-Tribune Review
Last year North Catholic beat Monessen in an overtime game. Monessen was defeated in overtime 24-23. This year Monessen played at North Catholic. Here was Gus Johnson’s call of the game:
“Thanks for joining us here tonight on tnhis mild fall night in the year of 2011. It’s been an exciting game and we’re almost finished here. And now for the game recap of how we got here. Monessen was looking to avenge the loss of last year defeat. They came out firing on all cylinders but were stopped on the opening drive. WR C. N. couldn’t handle a pass that could have been an easy touchdown. He tipped the ball straight up and it was picked off and taken back to the house. Remember his name folks because this wasn’t his only error tonight. North Catholic fumbled the PAT hold but ran in the ball in to convert for two. Monessen’s next score was the biggest shocker. D. B. drilled a 54 yard field goal. 8-3. North Catholic put up another touchdown before halftime. It was 15-3 going into the break which Monessen needed.”
“Coming out of the half North Catholic looked sluggish but manage to squeeze through a 40 yard field goal. A. P. did well to rally his troops. RB N. M. took Monessen into the endzone for the first time tonight with a 62 yard TD rush. D. B. tacked on the PAT. D. B. then executed a perfect onside kick and Monessen recovered at midfield. Monessen ran the hook and lateral in which C. R. connected to C. N. who pitched to N. M. for the score. The game was 18-17 headed into the 4th and Monessen with all momentum. Monessen’s defense held. N. M. scored on a 29 yard rush. Then the name to remember, C. N., fumbles the hold for D. B. who is unable to put Monessen up by six. This is crucial right now. Because just minutes ago North Catholic scored a touchdown to go up one. They are trying to go for two right now. They are clearly scared of D. B.’s leg.”
