Denzil was excited when he woke up this  morning. It was his birthday. He was the Big “5”. Yes!  He quickly brushed his teeth, had his bath, got dressed, slid down the banister and landed down the end of the steps with a loud bang.

He got up quickly to find his Mummy and his brother Sam.  Sam and mummy were blowing balloons. They had already blown up 3 gigantic balloons, all with the number 5 on them.

I am five today! He shouted excited as ever.

Denzil said to his mum “Can I have a balloon to blow please?” Mum said “Yes. After all it is your birthday”.   Denzil put the balloon in his mouth. He blew and blew but spit went everywhere. What a shower he gave mummy and Sam!

“S T  O P” shouted Sam.  He started to cry. Mum said in a kind soothing voice.  “What is the matter with you?” “I really want to blow a balloon and I just can’t do it” sighed Denzil. Mum said, “Try again and don’t give up”.

Denzil tried and tried but he still could not blow the balloon. He was very sad. Mum said “Don’t be sad Denzil, come and have some breakfast and after that you can try again.” Denzil rushed to have his special breakfast of Cocoa Pops mixed with Rice Crispies.

He then rushed again to blow his balloon, but still he could not blow the balloon up. “Oh no!”He sighed. Mum said try again and don’t give up.

 Sam gave Denzil his birthday present. Denzil opened his present “wow” he said, a Manchester United football kit, thanks Sam that’s what I always wanted. But Denzil was still sad as he really wanted to blow a balloon.

Denzil said to Sam “Can you show me how to blow a balloon please?” Denzil watched as Sam took a red balloon, put it in his mouth, took a deep breath and blew into the balloon. Denzil watched as the balloon got bigger and bigger and bigger and his eyes also grew bigger and bigger in amazement.

Suddenly, there was a very loud BANG as the balloon burst. “Wow” said Denzil.  “I wish I could do that.” Sam said “Don’t give up just try and try again.”
