A true-to-life experience about learning the good side of failure. ")
Many of us have experienced trials and challenges in life. We tend to face them all but then; we could not control each situation in our lives, for we are just humans who commit mistakes. And by this, we could say we failed. But for me, failure is not a tool that hinders us from growing as individuals. Instead, it is the beginning of learning to face the more difficult trials of life.
Last summer, I was confused of what course to take. And I needed to do something, perhaps to discern and contemplate on things. In that time, I and my best friend, Mariel, decided to do something for summer. We came up to the idea of enrolling in a Karate class. I was then so anxious about that sudden decision. But eventually, it turned out to be fun and exciting. What is supposed to be just my past time for the summer turned out to be my passion. For me, karate is not just a sport to defend one’s self against bad people but a tool for learning the value of discipline, camaraderie and patience. For me, this is the important thing that motivates me to do more and to do my best in really learning it.
I considered my first competition as my first sweet success. Even though I lost, I was still happy since I have experience being in a tournament and I have learned something from it. And by that, I have pushed myself more in our practices to prepare myself in the examination wherein I have to perform kata and kihon (basic techniques that are taught and practiced).
Last August 28, it was the day that I was promoted to 7th Kyu (rank). I never felt so happy that the sacrifices have already paid off.
Intramurals was approaching and our sempai was looking for a woman who is going to compete in the woman’s division. I took the courage of joining the Arts and Sciences karate team, even though I was not that confident about my ability. It was a bit challenging for I have to manage my time in daily practices with my studies, since I am also a student who needed to pass requirements and study for quizzes or exams.
