A ghost encounter on a New Hampshire highway.
It was the perfect day in my new home town of Holderness N.H. and being my birthday I took a well deserved day off to explore some of the local pubs. Well local as far as New Hampshire goes. Id spent most of the day driving from town to town learning as best I could to navigate the back roads. It was on one of these roads I first saw her, It was right at dusk and I was heading home. She was standing on the shoulder, and I could tell by the way she was dressed she wasn’t your normal hitchhiker. Normally not one to pick up a hitchhiker I drove on past before I decided to pick her up. I think it was a matter of her good looks and being my birthday that made me decide to turn around. With no other car in sight it didn’t take long to turn around, but by the time I got to where she was she had disappeared, I mean completely vanished! I pulled to the side and even got out to look around, but she was nowhere to be found. Its hard to explain how I felt as I scanned the landscape around me, but it was sort of a creepy peaceful feeling unlike any Ive ever experienced before or since. The feeling stayed with me for the rest of my ride home.
It was two days later that I really got creeped out, I was driving down the same road and at the exact place I saw her stood a cross adorned with fresh flowers. I drove pass this unsettling land mark a hundred times or so in the months that followed, and each time would recall her face. For a such a fleeting glance she was somehow embedded in my conscious. I couldn’t shake the feeling something supernatural had happened that night and that somehow it wasn’t over.
It was on a Saturday Months later that I was at what had become my favorite watering hole that I meet Sam. I had seen him there often enough but had never had the chance to speak with him. This night was different as we sat elbow to elbow over a few drinks he told me about the cross. It had been erected in memory of his daughter who had died in a freak accident at that spot a year prior on my birthday.I about chocked on my beer when he showed me a picture, It was the same girl, the same face Id seen a hundred times as I drove by the cross.
