A sobering experience.

After all these years in Korea, I still get a kick out the weird and absurd news that somehow finds its way into one of the English-language dailies in Korea.
Today’s gem is about a drunken man who ran into the sea in order to avoid a field sobriety test by police.
According to police in the southwest port city of Mokpo, “the 30-year-old man encountered police late Monday after heavily drinking liquor and police requested him to take the test; however, the man, identified only by his surname Choi, refused and pushed the officers aside, running into the sea.”
Prior to his evening dip in the sea, the police were about to arrest him due to his repeated refusal to take the test; instead the fire department had to be called (not quite sure why the police didn’t want to jump into the water after him; perhaps they are not trained swimmers) to fish him out of the sea. Choi was rescued by firemen five minutes later and sent to a nearby hospital. Although this sobering experience did not leave him in critical condition, police said his driving license has been canceled.
Maybe he figured that run into the cold sea would sober him up enough to pass the test.
