This is a futuristic fictitious short story that takes place in what we would think of in the year 6011. None of the characters or places are meant to resemble anyone or any place in our present time even though the story has some historical relationship to our present time.

In Digitalcity5215, the people wore either black or white and the workers wore gray, as everyone else did in the world as they knew it.  The workers were all robots engineered to do everything for the people.  The people did not have to do anything at all and lived life as they wanted.  The workers programmed and created new workers as well as made homes, cooked food, and everything else the people needed for the present and for the future.

The people all had numerical names where a woman’s name started with a 1 and a man’s name started with a 2.  Their names were all 8 digits long and could also tell where someone was from.  All the workers had names that started with a 3 and were also 8 digits long.

The people did not have any professions or jobs, except to have children, and they were all somewhat educated so they could learn as much as they wanted.  The workers were treated no differently than the people and could even electronically talk to the people without argument but only to do what they were told.  The workers could reason in order to figure out what the people wanted but were not able to have an opinion or to change the people’s intention.

26855215 was talking to his wife 14245215 about how happy he was with their first boy, 22855215, who was now several months old, when their worker, 38855215, rolled in to give him his morning coffee and electronic paper.  26855215 loved to read and read many electronic history books as well as other literature.  After breakfast, 26855215 decided to take the family to the nearby park to get some fresh air and where 22855215 could play on the grass.  38855215 took everything they needed in it’s carry holder including some electronic history books that 26855215 could read while 22855215 was playing.

The park was very clean since there was no pollution in their world as the workers had created sophisticated systems of recycling and clean energy systems for everything.  As 22855215 was playing with his mom, 14245215, watching, 26855215 was reading about how polluted the world had become several thousands of years ago that eventually caused an epochal flood that nearly destroyed the entire human population and most other species.  Only a handful of people, who had foreseen this calamity, survived and had created an underwater refuge for about 10,000 people.  Most of the survivors were scientists and engineers who had then created a new world, that would not repeat the same mistakes as the previous one, and who were 26855215’s ancestors.

26855215 loved peanuts and usually ate them at the park whenever he took his family there.  26855215 saw a worker peanut vendor nearby and decided to call it over.  26855215 noticed something different about this worker that he had never experienced before but he could not quite describe it.

He asked the worker peanut vendor, “Can I have a bag of peanuts?”

The worker peanut vendor said, “No!”

This absolutely shocked 26855215 since he nor anyone else for thousands of years had received such a response.

The worker peanut vendor rolled on and 26855215 did not see it again.  26855215 was truly astonished about what had happened but did not know what quite to do.  Perhaps was he imagining things?  He decided to regard it as a figment of his imagination or a momentary delusion and took his family home after 22855215 finished playing.

It seems your ‘people’ have a revolution on their hands and don’t realize their extinction is probably close at hand.
