A couple enjoys the new year.

Red, Blue, Yellow; colors dotted the cityscape, a haven in the darkness of the night. The gentle wind blew softly overhead and brought the sweet ocean smell towards the coast. Bursts of laughter, carried into the air by the wind, floated out to sea as the waves rolled forward, each gently swaying the boat to and fro.  A full moon glowed softly amongst a sea of stars and seemed to shine in unison with the motion. Candlelight illuminated the ship, casting soft shadows upon the wooden deck.
A puff escaped into the chilly winter air as she exhaled into her warm mittens. Her scarf took to the wind; she caught the floating end and brought it back around her frozen neck. She gave a quiet laugh and stepped forward on the cold floorboard of a sanctuary away from all the excitement of the night.
There was a clinking as he made his way up the stairs. In one hand, a pair of champagne glasses gently kissed with each step, a prelude of things to come; In the other, he held the bottle of sparkling wine, a 1999 Amour de Deutz Blanc de Blancs, a chardonnay that he kept wrapped for this occasion.
She stepped forward to meet him and he wrapped her gently in his warm arms. There was a sigh as they stood on the quiet deck, each rocking and swaying as the motion overtook them.
Silence. Not a word was uttered, breathed, nor thought; each had only one another in their minds. Suddenly there came a faint countdown from the lights in the night.
         “10! 9! 8!”

He gently placed her away and placed his lips of her forehead.
         “7! 6! 5!”

She giggled and shook her head; he broke his kiss, but leaned forward and nuzzled his nose into her neck.
          “4!”

After a gentle nibble on her neck, a smile crossed his face as his eyes met hers. She returned the look with a glowing shine in her eye.
          “3!”
Their eyes locked as they lost themselves in the moment. In their eyes, each other; in their arms, one another. In their hearts, a candle.
          “2!”
He slipped a wineglass into her hands. Their eye contact broke, each looking down at the shining glass in their hand.
          “1!”
Lifting the chardonnay into the air, he gave a smile but his lover merely rolled her eyes. He frowned and shrugged.
         “HAPPY NEW YEAR!”
A massive cheer erupted from a distance while bright, colorful flowers blossomed in the midnight sky. She flew into his arms, planting her lips firmly upon his. He gave out a muffled cry of surprise as they collapsed in a heap upon the deck.
After a a moment of struggling, he let both the glass and the wine fall gently on the deck as he took her in his arms. The flames on the candles continued their dance just as the lovers’ tongues.
She lifted her head and gave him a peck on the nose.
        “Happy new year,” she whispered.
He smiled. “I’ll take it as it comes, but for now, I’ll be content if this moment were to last a lifetime.”
Taking her face in his hands, lips met lips as the waves rocked them a silent lullaby.
