Five different ball carriers reach the end zone; Patriots are shutout.
For a brief moment, the Orange Glenn Patriots looked poised to upset the Pirates.
A minute and a half later, the Pirate defense woke up.
The Oceanside Pirates, once again, decimated their opponents for the fourth straight game, and remained unbeaten, defeating Orange Glenn High School 57-0 Friday night. A lengthy and well executed drive by the Patriots caught the Pirate defense off-guard, displaying brief success with short passes, runs through the middle and quick shovel passes. However, the Oceanside defense soon tightened up, and forced a turnover on downs on the same possession after the Patriots decided to attempt a fourth down conversion.
From that point on, it was smooth sailing for the pirates, as they went on to score on every offensive possession, and allowed only five first downs for the rest of the contest, one coming by way of penalty, while the other two came after substitutions were made by the Pirates to prevent injuries to key players after securing a victory.
Offensively, the Pirates centered their attention on the running game, utilizing its widespread talent by handing the ball off to six different ball carriers. The Pirates also scored seven of their eight touchdowns on the ground, while five different runners found their way into the end zone. The Patriot defense showed little effort defensively against the rush, allowing multiple runs of over 20 yards. The Patriots did, however, manage to limit the Pirates’ passing game, allowing only one touchdown through the air.
The undefeated Pirates (8-0) are expected to be tested next Friday against Valley Center High (8-0). The Valley Center Jaguars, fresh off of a win against previously unbeaten Ramona High School, handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season Friday night. Though Valley Center has not won many of its games in the same dominant fashion as the Pirates have, they are expected to present problems for the Pirates due to Oceanside’s tendency to struggle in highly anticipated games, such as those against close rival El Camino High and national powerhouse Long Beach Poly.
