A New Zealand diver finds himself in a struggle underwater with an octopus that sprang out of the seaweed.

A New Zealand diver found himself struggling with a wild octopus while trying to record it with his underwater digital camera. Victor was trying to capture the wild octopus below some seaweed when the octopus suddenly pounced onto him with its tentacles wrapped around his wrists.

Victor panicked at first as he thought that the octopus was trying to make a meal out of him. Soon Victor realized that octopus was just trying to grab the shiny digital camera from his hands. The octopus did manage to pry the digital camera from Victor’s hands and made a run with it. The diver gave chase for about 5 minutes before catching up with the “octothief”.

Victor used a spear gun to distract the octopus which it immediately grabbed as well. The diver somehow managed to retrieve his digital camera from the octopus mouth. Now the octopus decided not to let go of its new fascination, the spear gun. Victor ended up swimming around with octopus wrapped around his spear gun for while.

Victor in the end acknowledged that the octopus was just curious. The incident was not  life threatening but in fact a very  humorous and memorable one. The best thing of all, the digital camera was still recording when the whole ordeal was happening. Check the video below.

wow, that’s a good one! Since when an octopus so clever and curious? I think the octopus just wanted to borrow the camera to take a look but Victor mistaken, thought it wanted to steal it, LOL. Very interesting, Sharif, I enjoyed the write and the video.

That’s some real lunacy – what an experience! As always, a well written and engaging piece, I very much enjoyed it. Keeps me away from the sea, reminds me of Lovecraftian horrors and the depths! Craziness. Great article.

a very enjoyable read. i’m really glad that neither party were harmed and in any case, it is hard to imagine a small octopus attacking a grown up man. it reminds me of monty python. :) very funny and beautifully written. thanks for the share.
