Chapter 1.

I threw the paper plane out of the window, just another boring day in school, I thought. Maybe I should move schools, I’m not making any progress here… This school is terrible for gifted students. I peered out the window once more, it was a lovely day outside and I was stuck in this classroom. I heaved a sigh. So dull. “Hey, Mark” Ami, the girl sitting next to me, asked “You haven’t spoken all lesson, are you okay?”

“I’m fine”, I lied.

“Hmm, are you sure?” She replied.

“Ha, in this school? It’s so boring here I can’t stand it!” I confessed.

“Oh.” she simply said.

“I mean, if there was something to do that was fun, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad, but I’m bored out of my skull, continuously doing the same work, day in day out…” I continued.

“You mean something like magic?” She suggested.

“I think you’ve been watching a little too much Harry Potter” I replied coldly. She turned away, offended. I put my head down and continued with the work.

The bell rung after five minutes, It surprised me, I had not finished my work. Mr Gray, our teacher, called me and Ami to the front of the class. “I notice that you are the only two in this classroom who have not yet completed their work, would you like to explain this to me?” He calmly asked.

“Um, sorry sir, we were talking” I admitted.

“Well, I’m afraid I’m going to have to give you two a detention so you can finish the work” Mr Gray stated. I sighed again and rolled my eyes, this was going to be a long day.

It wasn’t until halfway through the work until I started noticing things out of the corner of my eye that were out of the ordinary, things were changing colour and going out of focus and sometimes even dissapearing, but whenever I looked at them fully they returned to normal. I remembered to tell my mom to let me get my eyesight tested. The detention promptly finished, Ami and I were released onto the field. “Wow that was stupid” raged Ami.

“When did you figure that out” I replied bitterly still annoyed at the fact life was so lugubrious.

“Sorry” She mumbled. “Oh but hey didn’t you notice all those weird things out of the corner of your eye too?” She asked.

I was slightly stunned at the fact she saw them too “Um, yeah I did, I thought It was just me…” I said, “I guess we both have eyesight problems.”

“You think this is to do with your eyesight?” Ami replied.

“Ugh, you’re not thinking that this is magic are you?” I asked sceptically, annoyed again.

“Why not though? Anything is possible!” She answered.

“Jeez, just grow up, Ami!” I said in a very annoyed tone, and walked away from her. She ran after me and didn’t say anything after that. The end of school bell rang out from somewhere across the field.

“Hey, Mark, why don’t we walk home together, we don’t live that far away from each other” Ami suggested. I nodded and walked to her side. Most of the journey home was silent until we came across something peculiar. “Wow, what is this?” Ami asked, surprised. I looked at it, it was a translucent oddity, anything I saw through it was distorted, like looking through glass that isn’t flat, but it was hovering in mid-air. I looked at it, stunned. I reached out to touch it and I heard Ami cry out but I didn’t hear what she said. As I touched it I felt Ami jump at me and hold onto me. The oddity started to pull me in, all of a sudden I hit my head on something hard and everything went dark.
