It was five colonies of Canada, Acadia, Hudson Bay, Newfoundland or Plaisance and Louisiana. By 1803 France had sold or lost through war all its territories in North America.

 

Georgeana, Massachusetts, which is the location of present day York, Maine was on this day in 1642 the first city to be incorporated in the United States.

 

Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne and Tituba were on this day in 1692 brought before the local magistrate in Salem Village, Massachusetts in what became known as the Salem witch trials.

 

Sweden introduced the Swedish calendar on this day in 1700 and gradually attempted to merge into the Gregorian calendar. By 1712 Sweden had reverted back to the Julian calendar before finally on this day in 1753 introducing the Gregorian calendar.

 

On this day in 1781, the Continental Congress, a convention of delegates from the thirteen colonies, adopted the Articles of Confederation, this was the first constitution of the US. The first census in the US was authorized on this day in 1790. Ohio was admitted as the 17th US state in 1803.

 

After his impeachment trial by the US Senate, Justice Samuel Chase was acquitted on this day in 1805.
