On this day in 1532 the Spanish explorer and conquistador Francisco Pizarro captured the emperor Atahualpa, the leader of the Inca’s after setting a trap to kill his army. This led to the Spanish eventually taking control of the majority of the South American continent. In 1776 the British attacked and captured Fort Washington during the American Revolution.

During the American Civil War the battle of Campbell Station at Knoxville, Tennessee took place on this day in 1863.

 

A deadly bonfire that collapsed killing 12 during its construction at A&M University in Texas was begun to be built on this day in 1999, the bonfire was a tradition that went back 90 years. Building of such large bonfires was suspended after this event although unofficial bonfires for the annual football game against archrivals the University of Texas continued from 2002.

 

Oklahoma became the 46th state to enter the United States on the 16th November 1907, and also on this day but in 1957 Oklahoma lost their winning streak when defeated by Notre Dame.

 

Benazir Bhutto was elected the leader of Pakistan in 1988, the first of two occasions she held this office. Each time she was removed from this position on corruption charges which were later dropped, she was campaigning for a third time when assassinated in 2007. She remains the only woman to have held the position of Prime Minister in Pakistan.

 

The hugely successful series of movies based on the Harry Potter books began on this day in 2001 when the first movie premiered in the USA, it had its world premiere in London two days earlier.

 

In 1915 Coca Cola had its contoured bottle design patented, the bottle was brought into general production the next year.

 

The actress Lisa Bonet was born on this day 1967, she married Lenny Kravitz on her 20th birthday. The couple were later divorced in 1993 after separating three years earlier. Another birthday celebrated on this day is that of Ukrainian ice skater Oksana Baiul. She was born in 1977 and won Olympic gold in 1994.
