How do two New York City Police Detectives explain the reemergence of a missing archeologist nine days after his entire team is murdered half a world away?
Adams let out a giggle.
“I saved them. I saved them from what I released upon the world. If I hadn’t, they would have felt the agony and torture our worlds been experiencing ever since I opened the gate!”
“What are you talking about Arthur?” asked Dr. Wilson.
Adams grimaced at the young woman.
“You stupid bitch, you don’t see it? The entire world is changing around you, people being murdered, raped, maimed…and you never stopped to lift your nose from your fucking books-”
Griffin slammed his fist on the table.
“All right Adams! Enough!”
“Don’t you see Detective? That that’s what I want? I want to die! I want you to kill me! I opened the gate and our world is being destroyed. I want to die before those, those “things” take me again. I had to kill my students because I couldn’t let them brings the sickness back, but there was no one left to kill me!”
Adams let out a child like sob.
“What do you mean sickness?” asked Griffin.
“The dark half. Set. Mammon! Don’t you see? I released him from his prison! He is infecting creation! You have to kill me! I don’t want him to take me again!”
Adams eyes rolled back into his head and he collapsed. His head and shoulders fell limp as Detective Griffin and Dr. Wilson tried to process what they had just been told.
“He’s really off the deep end isn’t he?” asked Griffin.
“He may very well be, but he believes everything he’s saying; every word. He believes that the devil, or Satan, or whoever is actively causing the increased violence, the weather changes, the strange effects in nature. It’s almost hard not to believe him” said Wilson.
“And him taking a bite out of my partner? Was that the devil? Was that one of his little ‘creatures’?” retorted Griffin.
“I don’t know” said Wilson “but does it really matter?”
Suddenly the door to interrogation was forced open, Ramirez stumbled in with his sidearm drawn. He quickly spoke: “Griff, things have gone shithouse out there man.”
