A parachutist that landed on the infield of New York’s Shea Stadium during Game Six of the 1986 World Series was fined $500 and sentenced to serve 100 hours of community service after finding himself in court for the stunt he pulled in 1986.

Michael Sergio, a 37 year old actor and Mets fan landed with a banner reading ‘Lets Go Mets’ in the first innings of the game between the Mets and the Boston Red Sox. The stadium was packed with over 55,000 spectators who witnessed the sudden unexpected arrival of the sky diver. He was cheered on upon his landing by those fans as police and security hastily removed him from the field of play. Sergio claimed he was an experienced parachutist and completed the jump to show his support for his team.

Upon his arrest the prosecution claimed that his actions had endangered the lives of fans and players as well as interrupting air traffic from the nearby LaGuardia Airport. He was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal trespassing. He spent the night in jail and was released without bail. When his day in court arrived he had a lawyer that he claimed had been provided with the assistance of several Mets players. His plea of guilty to a criminal trespass charge was accepted in exchange for the prosecution dropping the more serious charge of reckless endangerment. On December 19th  1986 he was given the sentence of community service as well as his being fined.

He was later held in contempt of court for refusing to reveal the name of the pilot flying the plane from which he jumped. As a result his contempt charge brought a reappearance in court in May 1987. This time he was given a six month sentence inside a federal jail.
