A short story about two mates who like betting on race horses for fun.

It was in the Spring of 1976,Mel rolled up in the car to Pete’s place. It was a Friday night as it usually was when they met once  weekly, so that the both of them could review the race guide from the morning paper. Mel knocks on the window attracting Pete’s attention, who is still having tea. Mel comes in and greets everyone having tea and says, “I’ll wait in the back room, o.k.”

“Yeah o.k , I’ll be there soon.” says Pete.

Pete hurriedly finishes off his food and drink excusing himself from the table. He rushes out to meet Mel,  who is already intensively looking at the guide.

“Look at this one it’s 4 kilograms better off from it’s last run where it ran a really good second. I’ve heard a bit about it this week from this bloke from work. I forget his name but hell it’s at odds of 15/1.” said Mel.

” Wait a minute, who the blazes are you talking about, what bloke, what horse ran second?” asked Pete.

” This bloke I think his name is Charlie.” said Mel

“He knows a couple of trainers and he gets some good information sometimes and this horse Triple x it’s a real good  runner over 1600 metres, it gets them covered and streets them. It was unlucky last start, but this week Pete, for sure,It’s  a certainty. ” says Mel.

“What if it doesn’t win, eh? is this mate of yours so sure, is he betting on it or has he just got a big mouth.”

asked Pete.

“Look Pete he gives good info, he told me it came straight from the trainer, he’s been waiting for the right race. It should have won last week too, but this is is the one they’ve been waiting for.” said Mel.

” I see it sounds o.k. I’ll have to check out it’s condition first by the way I am appreciative just need to be professional about it that’s all. If it’s sweated up it’s no go, we’ll check it out first alright.” said Pete.

” No sweat Pete.” said Mel.

” Good if it’s all o.k we’ll drop say $10,000. AT 10/1, right” said Pete.

” No problem one thousand bucks is o.k by me $500 each that’s o.k by me ” says Mel

                                                                2.

look if we win on that we can double up  on this one on a country track.” said Mel.

No! no way Mel we hit and run and that’s it, it’s useless any other way, that’s why I’m adopting this way which is the hit and run method.” said Pete.

“Great coffee” said Mel

“Thanks” said Pete

“So we’ll go out soon and head out at 12 noon because I like to see the hurdle races. Our race isn’t until 2.45pm” said Pete.

“Races! don’t worry we can go to the bar for a while.” says Mel.

“No drinkingwhen we’re doing business well not for me anyway it’s up to you, it just clogs your thinking.” said Pete.

They both then walked out of the house and used the brick path side to exit, hopped into Mel’s car and zoom away to the bank. They soon arrive at the bank They’re in luck there was only one customer in front of them. There are two tellers working as they enter the customer was just finishing off her business with a gleam in her eye. She greets them with a smile, they feel in luck but think nothing of it, they draw their money out of their accounts. They gather the cash and count it once again by the side tables. They tuck their money away in a safe place and other small amounts in their wallets as a precaution. They arrive back at the car
