A true story about the way it was back in the old days. This is a story snapshot of memories.
Once upon a time there was a young woman who was looking for a new career. Although she did have a very fulfilling career as a wife and mother, she somehow wanted something more.
Now this was back in the 1960’s so her desire was leaning towards the finance and accounting field. Not having had any previous experience, it appeared a bit daunting to break into this field. However, an opportunity to learn bookkeeping with on the job training was available and so she began.
She started working with a small manufacturing company, being trained by the owner’s wife. There were no computers to work with so everything had to be done manually. The weekly payroll was most important to keep the workers happy you know.
The procedure of paying these good people involved writing up pay envelopes with their names, hours worked, hourly rate, government deductions and so forth ending up with their net pay. All of this of course had been previously recorded in the company’s books.
Then the fun part began. The net amounts had to be broken down into dollars and cents so the employees could receive the proper bills and coins in their pay envelopes.
Later on, we were able to pay these good people by check, but until that could be arranged, we took these figures to our bank and had the teller give us the funds in the denominations specified.
Back at the office, the money was sorted and put into the pay envelopes, then we got to greet our workers and hand them their envelopes. They were very happy to see us and this weekly ritual then became very worthwhile as we made friends with them.
This is a true story and as you can probably tell, it comes back to me in a much brighter light today that in its original form.
I am now an eighty-six year old great-great grandmother starting out on a writing career. I hope to have more memories in story form come back to me, related to my previous career.
