College Life
by Elisha Lapiz, a BSIT student
College is a major turning point in the life of a student. Gone are the days of carefree conducts of high school. College is crammed with tight schedules, deadlines, and heavy requirements. Although struggles portray this new world, simple ways are always useful to be relieved from them.
As a freshman, the campus seemed huge, filled with thousands of strangers that I do not know, and navigating around it seems to require a map. You will have a hard time looking for your classroom because of the puzzling locations of the buildings. After about a month, though, you will be zipping around like you have been there for years, and everywhere you go, you’ll see people you know.
College started to feel boring. Nobody cared if I understood the lesson or not long as there salaries were being paid. I would go to class, go back to my room, throw my books down and go see a movie. That was very shameful and embarrassing.
When I was in high school, good grades came very easy to me. Usually all I had to do was show up for class and put forth a small effort and I made a decent grade. I was spoiled in this sense. I had a huge surprise when I began college. My first semester, I barely had a 2.0 GPA after I had graduated high school with a 90 GPA. I have never learned to study; I’d never needed to study. Forcing me to study became absolutely necessary after that.
Thankfully, I had friends to share the same burdens that I have. All of us, though, struggled to pass. We always meet to have a group study where we solve every problem and questions that we encounter. This is done to prepare our minds for the coming exams.
Since attending early years of college, I’ve definitely learned a lot. I understand college is a huge step out for many people. For most people the first semester is the hardest because you have to learn to deal with different pressures and deal with an unbelievable amount of freedom. To some, this is just very overwhelming and some make bad decisions.
Going to college was definitely a positive experience, not only did I gain valuable things but I met some wonderful people who I remain friends with. I also learned so much about myself and I feel that I have grown a bit as a person. It may have been hard financially and I certainly didn’t have the busy social life that most students do but going to college was one of the most constructive things I have ever done in my life and I don’t regret it one bit.
