A short children’s story from a fish perspective. Written for the grand daughters of Jan Deelstra.
Plucky was a very good fish. He kept his aquarium very clean. He was careful not to splash when he swam. He was very considerate of his neighbors that shared the aquarium. Plucky was quite old, for a fish. But he was very happy. He had a very good human to take care of his needs (which were few). Plucky’s human made certain to feed him just enough food, and to turn out his light at night so he was not kept awake by the brightness. Plucky’s human would talk with him for hours during the day. Plucky would watch the human play through the glass of his aquarium. It was how he liked to spend his day. He would watch the human paint on the canvas with bright vivid colors that made him feel good. It was quite often that Plucky’s human would sing as she drew pictures with colored markers. Under the water, the sweet sounds of singing would soothe Plucky. He felt safe just knowing the human was near. The human would peer down at Plucky, from above the open top of the aquarium. She would greet him with a sing-song-y voice saying “Hi Plucky! Good morning! Are you hungry? Do you like the new friends we brought to share the aquarium? Are you happy with the new plants we put into your tank?” Plucky never answered the human. He really didn’t have a strong enough voice to reach her ears. But he smiled, a fish smile. He was so happy to be loved by this human. He felt very secure. The human brought other little fish, and she always introduced them to Plucky. “This is so-and-so….” Plucky did not mind. He knew his human would always love him, and would care for him. He trusted that she would always feed him, and that he would always be able to watch her through the glass of his very clean aquarium. Plucky did not worry that his human might love the other fish and forget about him. Plucky knew that love was something that would never run out. His human had so much love to give that she would never run out of love, even if she had a million fish! Of course, it would be more work for Plucky if there were a million fish in the aquarium, but he would still keep the aquarium very clean. The secret was, Plucky kept the aquarium clean because he liked to look out through the glass. He really liked clean glass in his fish tank. And Plucky believed that the other fish were very happy to have a clean place to live.
