The second round of the first chapter of Pokemon Special begins with Red entering Porfessor Oaks lab, hoping he will teach him about Pokemon. Professor Oak isn’t there so Red looks around at the hundreds of Pokemon inside their Pokeballs.

He sees a Bulbasaur and is showing it his Poliwhirl, when Professor Oak walks in and mistakes Red for a thief and runs to him. This frightens Red and sends him into the table holding the Pokeballs, accidentally releasing most of them. After hunting down most of the Pokemon they realize that the Bulbasaur is the only one still missing. 

As they find Bulbasaur it runs into the abandoned Viridian Gym. When Oak tries to grab it, it tackles him. Red comforts the Bulbasaur, surprising Oak. While in the gym, they are attacked by a wild Machoke. Right as the Machoke is about to attack Red, Bulbasaur uses Vine Whip on its arm. Red notices sun coming through a hole in some shades and opens the shades. Bulbasaur uses the sun to use Solarbeam. Oak wakes up and finds out that Red didn’t actually know Bulbasaur could use that move, but he just knew that plants absorb sun. 

Oak lets Red keep the Bulbasaur for winning the battle. He also gives him a Pokedex, telling him to fill it. He states that he will become the world’s greatest trainer.
