Things have changed.

As soon as Lucus walked into Carol’s hospital room, she could see that something had changed with him. He didn’t have that standoffish look that had been there. He even had a smile on his handsome face. Oh well Carol thought, Fatherhood made men different she guessed.

“I thought I’d lost you there for awhile,” Lucus told her. Then he whispered, ” Thank God I didn’t.” Carol just stared at him for a moment. Did she see tears in his eyes? Goodness, being a daddy was making him all emotional, then it came to her what he had said. Lucus was putting a chair beside her bed, he needed to talk with her, he just wanted to sit and hold her hand. So reaching out Lucuspicked up Carol’s small hand and placed a kiss on the knuckle’s. “I was so scared that you weren’t going make it through having our child, even the doctor wasn’t sure. It tore me up thinking that you may leave me before I could tell you how I feel.” Lucus cleared his throat, then started talking again. “I don’t know why I haven’t told you before, I’ve felt it for a good while now but never really thought about it. So I’m telling you now, I love you Carol. I love you with everything I have in me.”

Carol started crying. She couldn’t help herself because she had wanted and had waited so long to hear him say those words. ” Lands sake woman, I didn’t mean to make you cry!” Lucus sputtered. ” Oh Lucus. I’m just so happy.” she replied tearfully. Standing beside her bed, Lucus bent down and kissed the tears from Carol’s face, then kissed her lips. Then jumped as if he had been shot when someone  spoke from the door. “Mr. James, your wife needs her rest.” The nurse stood there glaring at him and tapping her white shoed foot on the floor. ” Yes nurse, I was just leaving nurse.” Lucus said, turned and kissed his wife again. He winked at Carol before leaving the room.

Eight months later, Carol desided to give the house a good cleaning. Lucus had taken Timothy with him, so she had a lot of free time. After scubbing the bathrooms, gettings everything cleaned in Tim’s room, she started on her’s and Lucus’ room. Some of her clothes didn’t fit anymore, so she was throwing them out of the closet, old shoes went the way of the clothes. Carol noticed an old looking box in the back corner, so she got it and went to sit in the rocking chair next to the window. Carol had never seen this box before. She guessed that it held Lucus’ family photo’s and wanted to see. There was some papers folded, looked like something from a lawyer. Her curiosity got the best of her so she opened them and started to reading. With tears streaming down her face, she folded the papers and placed them back in the box, but kept the box on her lap. Carol sit and stared out the window. That’s how Lucus found her, when he got home.
