This is a true story of a thief? or not a thief? Judge for yourself after reading the story.

A Thief!

Just the last Wednesday night, my wife and I were almost asleep when her cellphone rang. She was informed that a man was caught in their old house with a knife, and the boarders thought he was a thief. Her heart raced but I told her to remain calm because the situation appears to be already in control. He was cornered in the toilet by the brother of the boarding house in-charge. We called up the police and informed of the citizen arrest. After undergoing a few incident verification procedure, two of the police immediately proceeded to the scene.

I illustrated the 5-inch bread knife and a light wood shaped as above.

At the Police Station

My wife and I went to the police station to find out details of the incident in the middle of the night. We met the police in-charge of the case and asked us whether we’d place charges or not. Apparently, the man was drunk, according to the police. I said we’ll be back in the morning when the guy is sober to talk with him.

At about 8 o’clock in the morning we returned to the police station and interviewed the man, a 21-year old migrant from Jolo, a distant island in Mindanao. He said he was just escaping three guys after him. He said he was not drunk (the police later admitted that his way of talking gave the impression he was drunk) and found the boarding house his refuge. When asked about the bread knife and a piece of wood he had with him, he said he brought those things for self defense. He also asked for our clemency because he had just had an appendicitis operation although I noticed the would had already healed as a scar is evident. Upon further conversation with him, we learned that he has a pregnant wife at home. He also told us that he was married several months ago to a Christian woman, while he is a Muslim, and it would be taboo to be doing that. A lady police knew their family and confirmed that this young man is betrothed to a Muslim woman and that his father is a businessman selling cars. He went against his father’s will of betrothal, was ostracized by the family and did not get financial support.

Whilst it’s an interesting story I find it strange that your wife is involved in a police matter.

I would think the accused is not guilty. Or, he shouldnt be put in jail at least. I mean, he didnt steal anything, right?

I tend to agree with Alena. A man cannot be arrested for intention, and his intentions are not known regardless.

As a Christian I would feel obligated to assist the man and his wife. There is a baby on the way. How will they provide for the baby and themselves? I would pray that God would lead me in the correct handling of this situation. Please keep us posted.

    Take care & God bless.

Yes Peter, I missed that detail. My wife oversees the boarding house. Here are some more details to think about:
    1) Upon apprehension, the guy was holding a piece of cloth from a boarder\’s dress, a rag probably for wiping. It further puzzled us. What would be his intention for that rag.
    2) Earlier, a boarder recalled that the guy once inquired for a room with another person.
    3) The boarding house has a tall (~6 feet) not easily scalable, metal gate that is always closed. There is an internet shop next to the gate. And nobody saw someone chasing somebody. The apprehended guy is ca. 5′ 2″ in height.
    4) The girl lives near her mother’s house and gets support from her family though apparently they also don’t have enough as she babysits for a living.

Thanks for your feedback Aleena and Judy. As I mentioned, we did not press charges for the sake of the pregnant wife. The issue seems to be complicated as there is an ongoing discussion among the young man’s senior relatives on how to deal with him. Also, while the girl is a Roman Catholic, they were wed in a Muslim ritual.

He might well have had guilty intentions, but that can’t be proved. I think that I would not have pressed charges in that situation.

Thats a puzzling one for sure! and as always in cases like this I am torn and would need more evidence to say that he was indeed guilty of doing anything apart from entering a place where he was not invited.
