Rainae had greater beauty and wisdom than any other woman in the world. Her husband was King Drometheum, whose acts of bravery and kindness were known throughout the kingdom. She had three courageous sons and two beautiful daughters. The kingdom was prosperous under their rule. There were no disputes between anyone, and all was peaceful. It seemed as though she was the most fortunate person in the world.

One evening, a messenger arrived at their castle and spoke to them about a problem that was mounting in size. The Cyclops and the Menaens were arguing about a property issue. On one side, the Cyclops were saying that their ancestors had acquired the land first, and that there was no proof that the area belonged to the Menaens. On the other side, the Menaens retorted that they had no evidence that their ancestors had acquired the land first, and that they only wanted to get food in the area; the forest was known for having many delicacies the Cyclops loved to eat. The messenger came to beg them to help with the problem, for they feared that this would cause a war. Drometheum agreed to help.

Bringing his three sons and his bravest daughter with him, Drometheum left for the kingdom of Trelaum to attempt to resolve the disagreement. One day later, a messenger returned to tell Rainae that her husband, sons, and daughter were dead by the hands of the Cyclops. The kingdom of Trelaum was now at war with the Cyclops. For many weeks, Rainae wept for her great loss and refused to speak to anyone. When she finally responded to speech, her daughters asked her if they could help in the war.

Rainae screamed with fury and told them to go in their rooms and think about what they had asked her. Her two remaining daughters secretly planned to leave the home in the middle of the night so they would not disturb their mother. When the sun rose, Rainae searched everywhere for her daughters but failed to find them. When she peered out of the windows, she discovered two ropes hanging from the ledge. Cursing them for leaving her, she screeched with greater fury and stormed out of the room.

Another messenger came and told her of her last two daughters’ deaths. Mourning their deaths, Rainae felt there was nothing worse that could happen to her. She was wrong. The next day, Cyclops appeared in the city and destroyed everything in their path. Everyone in her kingdom was killed. After the mass slaughter, the Cyclops picked her up and demanded her to give them her kingdom. She irately screamed at them and did not agree. This started a series of torturous events that the Cyclops tried to make her give up.

After many pain-inducing, nerve-wracking trials, the gods took pity on her and turned her into clouds. Whenever she was angry, she would strike lightning bolts and thunder loudly so all could hear her rage. When she felt particularly miserable, she would shed tears, which are now called rain after her name, Rainae.
