Law: Creative Writing Assignment pt 4

As soon as my lawyer had come to get me I was released on recognizance. This is where I make a formal promise to appear in court on a certain date or time. Also part of that promise is that if I fail to appear in court I have to pay a certain amount of money for my no show. This is just to ensure that I will show up in court for my trial. Other methods they could have used would be either a summons or an appearance notice. An appearance notice is where no arrest was made I just receive a notice in the mail of my court date, time and what I’m being charged with. A summons is basically the same as an appearance notice it’s just its issued by a justice or a judge after an arrest has been made. More serious offenders though are not granted either of this, they are held in detention to await a bail hearing that needs to happen within 24 hours or as soon as possible. If the offence is really serious, or there is a chance of a flight risk, or the offender has repeated offences they will not grant the accused a bail. They were imprisoned till their trial.
